POETICAL ASYLUM.
THE AMERICAN SAILOR. Liquid mountains roll, Shake from your heads the hoary spray ; Ye cannot daunt the Seaman's son!, Though danger spreads the pathless way Vivid lightnings flash BloU tempest, bellow thunder dire, The Seaman braves the dreadful cashThough billows to the elouds aspire. Rise pointed rocks, arise, Assaulted by the foaming surge ; Sailors your flinty sides d spisc, When friendship, love and honour urgi Roar thundering cannons, roar, Death-dealing bullets whistle round ; Let cowards wish themselves on shore, A Yankee Sailor loves the sound. CURIOUS S'J RATAGEM. The foikwing article is extracted from a Berraan paper, in which it is given under the head of Nuremberg: m A young man who had no fortune, requested a lawyer Who was his friend to recommend him to a family where he was a daily visitor, and where they had a handsome daughter, who was to have a large fortune. The lawyer agreed, but the father of the young lady, who loved money, immediately asked what property the young man had I The lawyer said he did not exactly know, but he would inquire. The next time he saw his young friend, he asked him if he had any property at all ? M No" replied he. ' Well, said the lawyer, 11 would you suffer any on e to cut off your nose if he should t;ive you 2 ,000 dollars for it ? What an idea! not for ail the world V M Tis well," replied the lawyer," I had reason for asking." The next time he saw the girl's father, he said, ' 1 have inquired about this young man's circumstances. He has Indeed no ready money but he bus a jewel, for which he has been offered 20,000 dollars." t his induced the old father to consent to the marriage, which accordingly took place, though it is said, that in the, sequel, he often shook his hi al when he thought o' tne jewel.
