Education. The Lion o'er his domain, Rules by the terror of his eye Th Eagle of the rock retains, Bv force his empire in the sky ; The Shark the tyrant of the flood. Pursues his prey with quenchless rage. Parent an young, unwean'd from blood, Are still the same from age to age. Of all thst live, and move, and breath, I in only rises o're his birth ; He looks above, around, beneath At once the heir of Heaven and earth, fejiorcc, cunning speed, which nature gave, The various tribes throughout her plan, Live to preseve, from death to save These arc the lowest powers of man. From strength to stength he travels on He leaves the lingering brute behind ! And when a few short years are gone, He boars a disembodied mind, Dcstin'd his future course sublime, Through nobler, better paths to run, With him the certain end ot time, Is but eternity begun. What aids him in this high pursuit, Opens, illumines, cheers the way, Discerns the immortal from the brute, God's image from the mould of clay ? 'Tis knowledge ! knowledge to the soul Is power and liberty and peace, And, while celestial ages roll, The joys of knowlege shall increase. Aid then the generous plan which spreads The light with universrl beams, And through the human desert leads Truth's living, pure, perpetual streams, Behold ! a new creation rise, New spirit breath'd into the clod, Where'er the voice of Wisdom cries, Man know thyself, and fear thy God. SBWBMW From the Connecticut Herald.
We bought them at Vendue.' 1 have lately been thinking what immence quantities of goods are bought a$ vendue. Scarcely any article of any description is for sale in this place, but tvl.at was bought at vendue Or perhaps to speak more politely, at auction. , Ila man will take the trouble to examine into the subject by visit im our
jiorcs, either of dry goods or groceries, he will be astonished, to find them entirely niied up with purchases at auction. A countryman wisnes to buy rum, sugar, gin or brandy he inquires the Brice he is told Sc it is added, k Ave could not afford it so low but we bought it at auction ' A young lady goes out a shopping (as it is termed) she enters a weli assorted store she gracefully curtesies and wishes to look at some cotton cambrics, lawns, cc. pray what is the price of this Three and six Miss it is the only piece left M;ss Rattle took 80 yards just now we could not afford it so low, but it was bought at auction Upon my word they are good goods. I will thank you to show me your silk hose With great pleasure Miss 4 How dp vou sell them?, Why we will put them to vou at 13 shillings; they cost twenty bv the dozen but they come a trifle under to us, as we purchased them at auction 1 Next comes a gentleman who enquires for broad cloth. Ve have one piece only left it is very excellent,' 1 What is the price, sir V Nine dollars and a half, we dont scarcely get the first cost; we were fortunate in striking off a lot at auction; but their is no more to be had Only look at the thread, it is very &tout I assure vou, Next enters a married lady " Have you anv cambrics fine and handsome for a gown ?' 4 Yes, ma lam, one pat cm only, Irs. Flambeau took the other this morning all the ton in N. York ' ' What is the price si;- V - We w ill put it 4s and 2d as it is the last; but we could not afford it under a dollar only we purchased it at auction.' Now as examples are very influential, I anticipate the dav when the sellers of almost all commodities will adopt the language so much in voiruc. Soon the farmer wil declare, thst he could not afford his com, notatoes and oats so low, but he purchased them at endue. Pie:s, geese turkeys, chickens tgjfc Si apples, will all come to us very cheap, because they
were purchrsed at vendue ; and oysters, clams and lobsters will be soid at half price, because they were purchased at auction ' bus we may fairly calculate that at no distant period, living will be 50 per cent lower than it now is, in consequence of the universal practice of Dying at auction or vendue.
Interesting to the printers. Te following humours article, is copied, from the Orange ; ounty Patriot It may perhaps, be in anticipation of the good dispositions and intentions of some oi our worthy patrons. 'Let me scee don't I owe the printer something ? Is'nt it a long time since wc paid him ; Yes. Well then, this is the season when he must provide something for the employment of his teeth duriag the w inter, and something to keep himself and his little family warm. I guess
we must try to muster up as mucn as w ill pay him off send it him, perhaps it will cheer him up a little, and he may give us more news; and it will certainly give us more pleasure to read the papers ! after we have paid off. Yes, I think it will be best to go and pay him; for thof he may be ever so much in want I know- I he is too modest to be dunning us for it; and 'mcshure he don't like to sue, Or else he would have sued us before.
Don t let me-jforget now to go Sc pay him or send it by the first chance.
