FEVER AXD AGUE ' AND intermittent Fever, Cured. THE subscribers have just received of Dr. Griffith, from New-Jersey, an infalible remedy for the above mentioned diseases. When this medicine was first announced to the citizens of NTev- ork, Mr. John Murray, one of the most respectable merchants then certified that in thirty instances where he had known it used, a single box never failed to cure in three days, several other gentlemen there and of Cincinnatti attested to its superior efficacy, it is safely taken in pills, or mixed with any drink, and has no sensible operation printed directions accompany each box. NEWSPAPERS. From the Richmond ompiler we earn that fol towing curious facts. n 1780 there was a newspaper printed by Dixon and icholson at Williamsburg, then the seat of government for the State of Virginia. The conditions were conspicuously placed at the head of the paper, and run thus Ail persons may be supplied with this paper at Fli Y DOLLARS a year, and have advertisements (of a moderate length) inserted for ten dollars the first week and seven dollars for each week after." That nothing may be wanting to excite interest in this account, it is to be added that the paper was published only once a &eek ! Fifty dollars a year for a Weekly newspaper ! This singular article induced us to turn to Thomas's History of Printing, in America, a very curious book, to see whether he had taken any notice of the facts mentioned. He mentions no such firm as " Dixon and Nicolson," but states that Clarkson and Davis " gegan the publication of a newspaper at illiamsburg in April 1718. Nothing is said of the terms of the newspaper, but it is stated that so erly as 1736 a newspaper was established at Williamsburg, by W Parks. We are led from the interest of the matter winch presents itself, to extend this article so far as to make an extract from the work before us. ' Sir Wm. B irk ley who was governor of the colony (of Virginia) 38 years, in his 23d answer to the enquiries of the lords of the Council for the Colonies m 1671. 64 years after the settlement of Virginia, says I thank God we have no free schools nor printing, and I hops we shall not have these hundred years. For learning has brought disobedience and heresy and sects into the world ; and printing has divulged them and the libels against the government. God keep us from both !!" Lord Effingham, who was appointed governor in 1683 was ordered expressly " to allow no person to use a printing press, on any occasion whatsoever" Mr Thomas does not mention when the first printing press was put up in Virginia, but he states that so late as 1766," there was but one printing house in the colony, and this was thought to be too much under the control of the Governor." Oceanica, or fifth part of the world, has just undergone its revolution too. The Island of Otaheite, which Bougainville, and Cook after him, have rendered so famous on the old continent, had seen its king become christian dethroned by idolaters : Pomare had been obliged to fiv from his kingdom. Since 1 808, Upfate rc igned in his place. Here follows an account of the successes of Pomare, as heretofore stated, his restoration to power, and the effect of his example in christianizing the islanders who embraced the religion of their sovereign." Christianity has promoted the sciences, and sciences have served it in their turn. The triumph of their faith in the austral ocean is only due to the progiess of information and to that spirit of inquiry which has characterized the philosophy of she 18th century. The time has arrived when America is to lose the name of .V, iu World. There is a newer world than America, whose name is not yet generally adopted. Some call it Australasia ; onthers Oceantca ; those Terrae Australse ; those P lynesia. The fifth part of the globe is composed of New-Holland and New-Zealand; of New-Caledonia and the Hebrides, of New-Phi llippinea ; of the Van -Dei man Land, of Solomon Isles, Friendly Isles, Navigators Island, Society Islands, Low Island, and ill the Islands of the immense Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean. Bougainville was the first wl o called the attention of Europe to those re ions so long unknown. O her navigators have) since surveyed and explored their.. The arts have been carried thither. Light has penetrated there by the preac! m. s of missionaries, by commen ; 1 inter course by the ship-wrecked Europeans who have been cast on these V. les, by sailors seduced bv distant climates, a
