Baltimore, Aug. 4. The price of new wheat has increased to 7'wo Dt llars & Jifty cents ficr bushel, notwithstanding the abundant crops Which are stated to have been made in some parts ot this st&te. There is no doubt, howevct, that this increase of price has in some measure been caused by the accounts of the great deficiency in tiie crops on the Eastern shore, where theavc : age produce is scarcely one tenth part of a commonly good crop. From the New -Or leans commercial fires. Afr Hatting', Visiting a friend a few evenings ago he observed that he had seen an experiment tried, which was n. him inexplicable ; and to satisfy me he called fr a small metal vessel ( b lieve a brsss skiilet,) suspended a key in the centre of the vesse l by a thread one end of which he held between his thumb and finger, when the key soon began to '-i-brate and actually struck the hour of the evening) and then ceased h motion.- I took a thread and the same result follow1 l. I however considered it was produced by the impetus gien by the motion of the hand, rather than by the pulsation of the fingers and perhaps should never again have thought of the. subject, had I not met with wh following at tide, which if you hae no objection will thank you to insert for t;. n ation of the cmious, in the present plentiful acar- , -ii v" k;f lit CURIOUS. The following extract from Dr Thomp son's annals, details a very singular iact. Si R,--. i he following curious and mj sU r-,f)js experiment, v hich 1 have several times performed, you may perhaps consider of sufficient interest to occupy a place in youi annals L t a sixpence be fastened by means of a loop to a piece ot thread and the otner end held between the first finger and thumb. P-uce your elbow upon a table within a few inches of a ciean glass tumbler in such a manner that the meial may be suspended rather higher than the centre of the glass. If it be held quiet, it will soon begin to vibrate which will increase to that degree as to cause it to strike the sides of the glass So far it is singular. But the mystery consists in the number of times it strikes the glass, always corresponding with the hour last struck bv a clock, if the experiment should be tried a little before one o'clock it will strike twelve times, and then stop ; if a few minutes after, it will strike one, and almost instantly cease to vibrate. This appears to me extremely curious, as the cause which I should presume was electi icial,) and one should think, would possess the same power ten minutes before as ten minutes after i o'clock : and hati; si'.ll more curious is, that having produced the effect related, it sheuid almost instant iy cease to act as ihe piece of metal soon becomes stationary, and must be removed from the glass before it can again ibiute.
LATEST FROM FX'ROPE. BOSTON, AUG. 86. The ship Paragon, Capt. Macwowan, arrived at this port yesterday, in 43 days from Greenock. The papers of the city are to the 1 2th July, and contain London dates to the 8th, one day later than the accounts by the Vartha. The following extracts are from the Exchange Coffee lloust Books :
The patent of the Emperor of ustria has been published In Gallicia for tne establishment ol a Rept esentative Constitution in Gaiiicia, Lodomei la, and the Bukowine. This constitution is saio to be the result of an agreement between the powers interested in the affairs of Poland, and under which, also, aii the States and Provinces, heretofore forming part of that kingdom are to have Representative t onstitutions. A commercial letter from Bavonne asserts, that the Lisbon plot had ramifications in many provinces of Portugal; that the arrests at Coimbra had been preceded bv a tumult, and that several British officers had fallen victims to assassination By accounts from Spain, it appears that the grand finance plan, projected by the minister Garay, is not to be carried into execution till January. 1818 This delay originates in the opposition of the nobles and high churchmen, who will be most affected by its being put into execution; and, in the mean time, it is expected the minister himself will lose his place. French papers received at Greenock announce the arrest ofGenerai Domage and Balair, and of the Marchioness de Lavalette. German papers state that Prussia, Holiand, Switzerland, Hesse Cassel, Bavaria, Wurtemburg, and some other smail German C ourts, have made demands on ranee for the restitution of the sums extorted from them by Bonaparte, chiefly under the name of ioans, to e amount to sixty millions sterling. An article in foreign paper mentions ' ' tegoctationa are actuary going forward between the Aided Powers and the French Government, to remove f"om F ance within the present year, a second 5th of the army of occupation.
