THE WESTERN SUN. ViNCENNES SEPT. 20, 1817. Executive Appointments. Isaac Blackford, Esq. Judge of the Supreme Court in the place of John Johnston, deceased. William Hoggatt, Quarter Master General of the Militia of the state of Indiana. Ind. Gaz. A Norfolk paper of the 15th instant States, that a combat took piace at St Croix, between some American sailors belonging to the ship Gleaner, of NewYork, and a part of the crew of a Danish government vessel, in Which the former is represented as coming off victorious, having handled the Danes very roughly. The day following the recontre a boat put off from a Danish vessel with a number of sailors, but no officer, and rowed to wards the Gleaner. When sufficiently rear, they rested on their oars, and commenced abusing the American sailors ; who, in return, assailed the Danes with whatever missiles they could lay their hands on, which compelled them to seek safety in flight. A complaint was thereon lodged with the Governor ol the Island founded on an alleged indignity offered the Danish flag. A court was convened the Americans ordered ashore for trial, when it was proven that the Danish sailors were. the a aggressors in every instance. Both the law and the evidence acquitted the Americans of the charge upon which they were arraigned - yet notwithstanding, the Governor in order to allay the clamors of the plaintiffs ordered that the Stewart of the Gleaner should be selected for punishment, and receive Twenty-Five Lashes, which sentence was rigidly executed, LOOK HERE.
