THE WESTERN SUN,

VINCBNNB8

Saturday Morning, July L2. jVith pleasure we announce (Jov. Posey as candidate for the suffrages of the freemen of this state, to represent them in the 1 5th Congress. When we reflect that this venerable Ulan belonged to that family who purchased the inestimable right) wilich he now offers to be favored with we cannot believe that there are any who are so lost to the noble passion of gratitude and to their own interests asn t to rally round this remaining p&tr lot, and hail him as their choice. Those who have faced the foe during the day, and reposed upon tue mossy couch at night the bending heavens their covering, their arms their pillow, know what his c ountry owes him for his military exertions those who have read, know how t appreciate his political services those who are acquainted with Ins private reputation, know it to be unspotted Who then among us will oppose his election ? Nro:ie but the ambitious the selfish the ungrateful or those who know nothing of the qualifications of the man. GENu W. JO tNSTON willrrre his fellow Citizens, if a majority of them by their vote request him, in the next session of the Legislature. We arc authorised to state that Ovid Flint, offers himself as a ca liJate tor the olVice of Sheriff, for the county of Davis We arc authorised to say that O R C. Sullivan, will serve the people, in the next Legislature, if elected. WE are requested to s e that Isaac Blackford, Esq. if elected, will serve the people in the next Legislature. WE are also aut torised to state, that John BSKKPtftLD ofSuLLtVAH COUHTt is a candidate, for the favor of the people at the neat election. In.r. Stout, 1 have understood with much pleasure that Gov. Posey his yielded to tue wishes of his friends in consenting to seve the peop.e of this state in Congress MT elected. A man whose character stands stWh'h, who has faithfu ly served his cdftntV in various situations from the commencement of the Revolution to the present day, cannot fail to meet with the confidence and support of the people. 1

am well convinced from my knowledge

oi him, thai he is actuated by no other modvtj in consenting to become a Candidate, than a pure and disinterested wish to promote the political welfare of the people. His mind is-too pure Ids sense of propriety too sacred, to become the instrument In sanction any other principle than a sincere wish to contribute all in his power to promote the public good, in a manner that wili be honourable to himself, and to his country. Tue Governor's health which for several years since he has been amongst us, has been bad, is now happily restored, and he is How able, and if the prop e choose, willing, to go to Washington & use ids best exertions to guard their rights and promotes their interest. When he was before the people last year, reports were but too successfully propogatcd by his enemies, thai his great age and infirmities disqualified him from discharging the duties of the office for which he vas then a candidate. It is isv to make assertia s, and some men unbluehin rly ami Unhesitatingly make them to answer their own individual iews. Gov. Posev's age is not is great as hundreds of m en Who are sei sin- in high and responsible offices in different parts of the U. States, and yet we hear no complaint of those men not discharging their duties satisfactorily and with ability. Our hue President Mr. Madison is nearly, if not quite as old as the Governor and the present chief-magistrate mr. .Monroe i. very little younger than either. No person will 1 presume be hardy enough to say that those illustrious men are incompetent from age to discharge the duties attached to the high office ol President of the Union a i h distinguished ability, If they do, ti e voice ot millions will deny the al ligation. There la v arcely any man who becomes a candidate for popular favour, igainst whom charges of some k ind or other are not made. Whether this proceeds from the imperfection of human nature, or thcjmmeness f some indivi

duaia to calumny and detraction, l leave

it for others to determine. In regard to the present instance, I will observe that Gov. Posey is in full possession of his mental as well as physical powers, and that he has given the best evidence of his zeal for the public good, in a course of forty years of faithful services to Ins Country. Will not such a man be entitled to the public confidence ? Can a man who has sealed his devotion to his Country with his blood, who has honourably filled the highesAaud most responsible offices, be viewetT with suspicion, or rejected to make room for others, who have no such claims to support them ? I pretend not to support Gov. Posey by making comparisons between him and any other person who may come in competition with him ; go upon the broad basis of his services and his merit, and 1 do not hesitate to say that these, in my estimation entitle him to the gratitude Sc confidence of the people. I hope at the polls that we shall ah rally around this gallant old soldier, t' is excellent citizen ! fhis venerable Patriot, who in the days that tried men's souls" victoriously breasted the storm which threatened to overwhelm our liberties and degrade us ;o the characters we despise, that of biiie mavle slaves to a tyrant.

A VOTER.

To the elector of Sullivan Knox,

Davis counties Fellow-citizens, By t .e mutual solicitations of my friends, I am induced to offer myself as a candidate for a seat in your next leerisLature. From urgent considerations 1 thought it my duty to offer my services to the people, as it was the wishes of those who are acquainted with me, and likewise my principle:, a warm and devoted republican; and my qualifications necessary for the discharge of the duty incumbent on me as a legislator. Should I meet with your approbation in tender! ig my services for such a public charge, and you should consider me competent for the performance of the task and willingly confide to my cu e such an important trust, it is only necessary for me to say I will b : vigii nt in the discharge of my duty and use my best endeavors to promote your political we 'fare. i am respectfully vours, VVIL JAM PITTS.
