THE GOOD WIFE. There 'lived a man, as Sagos say, (No matter when or where) Who had a wife both brisk and gay ; The lady too was fair. No jarring demon broke their rest, Their days were spent in glee ; Of woman kind she was the best. As good as one need be. One sportive foible she had caught ; Was it a great one ? No : Whene'er her husband told her aught, She'd always answer quick as thot I told you 'twould be so. One day Tom started from the plough, And to the house he ran; Jenny I a tale 111 tell you now, And trembling thus began : Alas, my dear we're all undone ; How wretched is our plight, Tin- sorrel Horse has ate the Sun, And wrapt the world in night. Jenny replied, with looks sincere, The fault is your's I trow , To me the thing was always clear; I told you 'twould be so. rpToram. Tom taken by Tim, his new mansion to view, Observed, "'twas a big one, With windows too few :' As for that," answered Tim, u I'm the builder's forgiver, For taxes 'twill save, and that's good for the tiver Replied Tom. u since you live upon farthings and mites, Its good for the liver, but bad for the light . AG REE ABLE PROSJP fi C IS. I is highly gratifying to observe the increasing spirit of enterprize among the people in various parts of the country as it respects roads canals improved methods of transportation by land, and in regard to domestic manufactures, &c, The conviction appears to be at last prevailing, that the day of universal speculation, ot" mush room fortunes and of luxurious livings is over for the present ; & that the time has arrived when we must commence a rigid scrutiny" into our accounts, and our resources : when we must set our deranged affairs in order, and begin business on a new scale, and in a new channel. The people seem to be looking about them in good earnest to discover wheiti their true and permanent interest lies ; and with the spirit of reseau'h which now animates them t; ey cannot long remain ignorant of their true policy ; and it is a m st promising circumstance, that while Industry is getting into public favor her sister Temperance is not forgotten : while our legislatures, corporations, &c. are endeav oring to foster the spirit of enterprize in domestic improvements and manufactures, the synods and other respectable bodies in various parts of the country,
are investigating and exposing to public view the prevalence and miserable effects of intemperance. The best wishes of the good and t e wise must accompany every effort to countenance industrious &.d discourage vicious habits. Del. Watchman. Hackle street, next door to the Cat's Paw Tavern, offers her services to the public to teach the noble art of Scolding & Quarrelling, in good or bad humor, in love or spite ; by the day, hour, minute or second ; early or late ; before or after meal ; without regard to any person in Dutch or English. She has discovered a new way for women to pull the hair and cap of their adversary. Scolding, &c taught in the gent elesf manner to country women as well as town ladies. Judges and magistrates scolded in the neatest style. She has a very peculiar mode of scolding, adapted to every age and circumstance
in life. Married women taught to scold their husbands blind deaf and dumb in 6 weeks. Asa proof of her abilities in this polite acquirement, she scolded 8 husbands to death in 3 years time, & the 9th is far gone. She teaches; how to make grimaces or furious faces ; how to look sharp Mary Magdalen like : sleepy husbands may have their wives taught to scold them awake. She scolded the teeth out of her head the first vear she followed this noble business, which renders her incapable of teaching the art of biting ; but on the other hand she is not afflicted with the tooth alic, which is a great advantage. She is well provided with needles and pins, to teach how to scratch faces arms, hands, eyes, ike. Water changed into vinegar by scolding. Scolding done in the newest and most approved stile, in black, blue red, or any other colour, on the shortest notice.
