THE WESTERN SUN,

VINCENNES, SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 1817. COMMUNICATION It will not require an elaborate treatise to prove the position taken in my last—namely, that every thing said in the Sun respecting the Centinei) was completely authonsablc. Ai 'newspaper sqUlbsY appropi lately so called, are generally unprofitabli even loathsome to the public eve the thorter, and the sou -Her over them the better. It was sai 1. that a certain great personage is an intriguing) time-serving, 6t ambitious man that he has heretofore 'manifested a disposition, and expressed an intention to have a press t stabiished at this place under his auspices, to subserve his VteWS) aii l promote his ae;trrandiseni' iit. Were these statements unauthorised ? It was said, that Mr. Dilwofth came forward as an Editor amotl pit us viih a letter of recommendation Prom governor Jenningfh his talisman his sole passport to public favor and encouragement ; that he derived support from the active extra his of the governor's avowed adherents. Were these facts or falsehoods I As a COmmeDt on the above, the people were advised to beware of counterfeits to be especially careful lest an enemy) under the specious garb of a friend) should creep in among them, win and impose on their confidence, and eventuallv mi ace distr opinions, and ; ert the honest endeavors of j;r'vi principles in a good cause. Every candid mi&d is asked Was this Unjustifiable and unautiiorised ? tliese things Were presented with temper and propriety no inuendo. r.o currility or abuse v. as displayed and it is defied to point out one expression of any publication in the Sun, on the subject of the Centinei, savoring of malice or illiberal jealousy. It is well known that such things as hireling presses do exist, and it is deplorably known that they can produce injurious effects. Without accusing Mr. D. as the proprietor of such a one may it no be asserted, that his Centinei is ushe red in with i ircumstances at least sufficiently suspicious, to authorise an Editor havi ig the interest and welfare . of tne people at heail, to advise caution. r;.AY FAIR. .W'lU'S!
