Vintennes.... October 5, 1810.
WE feel a ori'le in stating to ' our readers that during the three wreVs of the sale of Public lands in this pla e. there was 906 tracts gold and t'iat the saVs avaraged , 3 per acre. This affords to tie world the m st u leqiiivoea) evidence of the estimation in which not only the soil, but the climate and commercial advantages of the W abash country are holden nd the flattering prospects of its soon becoming equal in population to any of our sister states. We feci no apprehension of being contradicted when we state that never have the 17. States at any prece ling sale, sold half the quantity of land nor has its average been so high nor do we believe it has been overrated ; for no stae in the Union can boast of greater advantages ! Nine hundred and six tracts of 160 acres to the tract makes a total of 1 14.950 acres, which at , 3 per acre make the sales amount t o a total of 434 88 X to which we may safely add 200 tracts entered during tlie present week at t 2 making the total of sales the last four weeks. 272.960 acres, & total in Dollars 498.980. We cannot at the same time refrain from a ldinsr, that in a dditiort to the above sales the CanhaJian Refugees have locate I not less than 23,040 acres which might have been fairly estimated at $ 0 an acre because of their pre-emption, & would have brot into the United States Treasury
138.210. but which was estima
ted to them at $2 per acre, equal to $46080. A'i l admitting the Whole number entitled to be included in the above estimate, the

he scramble for office in
thrslmavs is amazing; one would
be led suppose that the way to office was the way to wealth and happiness : but speculators on office are seldom rich never happy. An office hunter is u powwowing animal, who for the sheer gratification of pocketing as much publifi cash as lie would earn in half the time, by attending to any reputable occupation, spends his days under the constant oppression of mortified feelings. Dr. Franklin knew the usefulness of such men, both as it regarded themselves and the public. In the old constitution of Pennsylvania, which had the reputation of proceeding from liis pen. it was attempted to guard against the race; as appears (says the Harrisburg Chronicle) from the following extract from the 36tk article: '(fAs every freeman, fo preserve his maependnce, (if he has not a sufficient estate) ought to have some profession, calling trade, or fariri, whereby he malr honestly subsist, there can be no necessity for. nor use in, establishing offi es of profit; the usual effects of which arc dependence and servility, Unbecoming freemen, in the possessors and expectants ; faction contention corruption $f disorder among the people. Wherefore, whenever any office, thro, increase of fees or otherwise, becomes so profitable, as to occasion many to aoply for it, the profits ought to be lessoned by the legislature."
