ly two United States' sun-boats, commanded by sayling master IiOOMis, appealed off fort Si. Mark, built by the famous Got. Nicholls, at 4ppalachicola ; midshipman L ughborough & three seamen rowed up i i the bay in a boat to procure water. Alter pro ceeding some distance they were beckoned by a ne nn on the shore in a manner thai appeared to be friendly, and v j en thev had approached him they received a heavy fire of musketry, which killed and wounded all the party but one, who escaped by swimming t the opposite side of the bay. One of the seamen, who was wounded, was dragged from the boat and burnt alive by these canibals, after ha ing first tarred his body, n revenge for this outrage the gun-b ats opened their fire upon t le fort which in a little time was blown up by tlie first hot ht thai was discharged. All the garrison, which was a motley collection of Indian- & runaway Negroes, and was commanded by
one of the latter, were killed or wounded by the explosion the wounded (about twelve in number! were taken by a detachment of troops and friendly Indians, under command of col. Clinch. It is said that some hundred British uniforms were discovered in the fort backed up in hogsheads. The number of men in the fort when the attack commenced, is supposed to have been 300. It is a happy thing for the ad jaeertt Americans as well as for the Spanish territories, that this band of brigands has been exter minated. Appal a hicola has long been a receptacle for all the runa way nesrxoe - of Georgia, Tennessee, the Mississippi territory and ensacola and tor all the hostile and outcast Indians of the Creek Semhiole tribes. The hot shot, hich provi d so fatal to the eteves of col. Nicholls, was directed by sailing master Basset, a1 the distance of 2 miles from the fort, and is anotherproof of the unrivalled skill of Americans in the use of fire armshe Was highly extolled by Colonel Clinch's Indians, who gave htm the tittle of the Little War Taptain : these people were lost in astonishment at tlie wonderful effec ts of the cannon ad e . About 3000 -'and of arinswere found in the fort, part of which have arrived at the Bayou St.
