Our Neighbors. The Quebec Gazette of the l 5th Feb. contains the following among other remarks on the recent correfpondcriCC of the fecret ry of (late u ;th the Spanifh minift r. They are of a Alt fcrcnt complexion from former articles of Canadian manufacture : " Will there ha war between Spain and the U. States ? This Will depend upon the fpirit of Ferdinand the adored ; that the Americans will keep what they have got, and ardently dettre to have more, that they will trade where they can advtntageoufly, & make their country a refuge for a population of aU Tuition:; it not to be doubted. That they will fight rather than forego a.iy of theft? ada;!van!;;cs, we have ample evidence ; and we are greatly Rliftaken ol the government and a great proportion ol the population would not i. jlad of a declaration of war on the part of Spain. The beat of the drum would immediately aflVmble a lare army beyond the Alleghanles lor an expedition to Mexico, nay, they won Id even enlift for Pern ; the Deeaturs, the Porters the Perrys, and hordes of Privateerfinen, would glory in a War with Spain. But will Great Britain interfere ? Such an event no doubt would be unpleafant ; but aft r the H fult of the laft war, it is not to be expeeled that, even in that cafe, the U. Stales would reatlily yield np any of their pre-
sent pretentions.
7 he LOOM. A young man whofe name is Campbell, is now in this ciy, for the purpofe of procuring a patent for a loom of the mod lingular conftruclion we have yet feen. It does away the neceffity of warping ; and when once in operation can be K ept (o for any length of time, that is, a ucb may be wove of any defired length, as the cloth is roiled out in fuch a Wanner as it can be cut off at any time without flopping the loom. The machinery is very (imple, and put in operation merely by turning a crank, and n vj u ires but a moment's infpcclion to be fully underllood. The warp is taken from bobbins or (pools. There can be no doubt but this new combination of machinery will gre atly reduce the exper.ee of fabricating cloth ; and will therefore be of much ufe to our country. Nat. Int. Buffalo, March. 5. Lrtft wet k a Hritilh foldler who had fome time fmce deferttd from the army in Canada, was apprehended bp one of our citizens ik Under cuftody of a conftable was iaken acrols the Niagara river and given up. The ilifcovcry of the lb am p W( r by the marquis Of W reeller, in K':iJ, is one of the mo(t important that has been beflcwed on the world by the in. ventinn of man ; and it will do more for the political economy ol nations in the promotion ol The arts, tltat any other difcovery whatever. We conjure the authorities of the United States of America to prefcrve inviolate to the people of this country the free ufe and application of this molt uleful invention, whether it is applied to grind grain, pump water, cut nails, (pin cotton, fulling of clotn, fawing of timber, or for propelling boats by fleam ; let no impollor infringe the facred rights of the people. The fteam power now is the property of the great family of man ; go on and build your fteam boats, and fear not. Well. Herald. The National Bank Rill has not been vet acted on in the senate. Its fate is variously predicted by its friends and enemies ; and the question appears to be poised in nearly equal scales. A proclamation has been issued in Lower Canada for calling a new parliament. The election to be held previous to the 25th April. The present parliament has been abruptly dissolved for its conduct in respect to the judges since the prince regent and his council ha e acquitted them. A sugae refinery has been erected at C incinnati, which is row in successful operation and is calculated to consume 50 barrels of Orleans sugar per week.
