A schoolmaster asked one of his boys on a sharp winters morning what was the latin for cold ; the boy hesitated a little : "What sirrah," said he, " cannot you tell ?" Yet sir," replied the boy, 1 have it at my finger's ends. Love overlooks trifles. THE WESTERN SUN VINCENNES, FEBRUARY 17, 1 8 1 6. On Monday, the 5th day of the present instant, the following persons were elected Trustees of the Borough of Vincennes for the ensuing twelve months, viz.__Charles Smith, Frederick Greater, E. Stout, John Ewing, Ellis McNamee, John D. May Owen Reilly, Mark Barnett, and Ambrose Mullet. uHP j. isusjpsai RICHMOND, January 9. Melancholy Catastrophe.__On the night of the lft mst, the dwelling house of Mr. Henry H. Burwell, of Mecklenburg county, was confirmed by fire, and lamentable to realate, fix of the family perished in the flames, viz Miss Mary Burwell, the elderly daughter of J. S. Burwell, esq. of Franklin, then on a visit; the infant child of mr. Peyton R. Burwell, who with his lady are now in Gloucester; and four fervant maids, Mrs. Burwell died on the next day and Mr. Burwell the day after, of the burns they received in escaping through the devouring element. The fire was discovered about midnight, which seems to have commenced at the stair case, and had made such progress as almost to cut off the possibility of escaping that way. Mr. Burwell did succeed in passing through the flames with his wife, but they were so severely burnt as to sink under the afflication. The family were sleeping in the second story. Miss Martha Burwell saved herself by jumping out of an upstair window, and was caught by a fervant woman --the fortunately received but litte injury. Mr. M. Hepburn, also escaped in the same way, and was much bruised. Fortunately Mrs. Burwell the elder, it Miss Jane were from home, Mr. H. H. Burwell was in the 35th year of his age, and had been married only three months. DOYLESTOWN, (Penn.) Jan. 9 Distressing Fire __On Sunday evening last, the house of Mr. Abraham Banner, in Hilltown township, was destroyed by fire. It was a large new stone building, and Mr. Benner's loss must be very considerable--but it is rendered peculiarly afflicting by the circumstance of his two children, one five and the other eight years of age, perished in the flames! The family except the children, were on a visit at a neighbours' when the fire took place, and its origin has not been ascertained. DIED, on the 8th day of December last, of a wound received the preceding day, in a duel with a fellow student of Carlisle college. John Corbin, the eldest son of a major Richard Corbin, of Lanesville, a young gentleman of most pleasing manners and promising acquirements. When the aged sink into the tomb, we bow in submission to inevitable destiny; when the slow progress of disease steals away the young, even then we do not refeuse to be comforted--but when a son, the fondest hopes of his devoted parents, one who had been reared with the most pleasing anticipations, and gazed at in the ardor of parental affection, until tears have started to the eye, is snatched to an
