New York. March 17. From the Continent of Europe The schr. Transit, , of Baltimore, arrived at N. London on the 2d inst. in-- days from Bordeaux. In the Transit came passengers, Christopher Hughes, esq. secretary of legation at Ghent, and bearer of dispatches, Wm. Shaler, esq attached to the lite mission at Ghent, & mr. George Boyle, of Washington, all of whom arrived in this city yesterday afternoon. The Transit sailed from Bordeaux on the 6th or January, and left the river on the 12th. An intelligent passenger in the Transit, very politely furnished the editors of the Mercantile Advertiser with the follo-
wing observeations relative to
the situation of the European
wers, viz :
"That the congress
was still in existence, they
it was believd there was no
harmony in the views of the great powers composing it. it is understood that Russia insists on the restoration of Poland under her exsclusive auspices. Prussia does not oppose this measure,- but insists on the entire acquisition of Saxony.
Austria and England indirec-
oppose their views, and
in concert. The move
rtaents ot he former indicate a determination to retain under her dominion the late kingdom of Italy, and the provinces lately, pertaining to the French empire in that country and in Illiria, Dalmatia, &c. while the latter is employing ail her influence in the consolidation of the military strength or North Germany, Holland and Belgium ; with the lame views, both these powers seem desirous to cultivate the best understanding with the king or Naples, whose military establishment is reported to surpass 80,000 men , and to be on the best footing of organization and equipment. 11 The unscttled state of public affairs in France ; her deranged finances ; the general discontent oi the military ; and the imbecility of the actual government of that country ; have prostrated all her influence in great political concerns of Europe : under such circumstances, all the
talents and intrigue of her minister Talleyrand, cannot raise her above a secondary consideration at Vienna. The illustrious exile of Elba con-
tinues to excite the interest and speculation of all Europe. "It would be difficult to describe the interest which the continent of Europe has taken in the events which have happened in America during the last year. Long accustomed to receive all their Impressions of America, and all accounts of the events of the war, immediately from England-- the glorious affair of Chippewa, of Niagara Falls, of Fort Erie of Lake Chippewa, of and the retreat of gov Prevost from the "new line of demarkation," all of which were correctly reported and under a stood in Europe, opened their eyes, and the people of the continent were no less amazed than delighted at the gallantry and skill displayed by American commanders & American soldiers. The names of out naval and military heroes are in the mouths of every one. from regarding us
as a people about to be con-
quered by the enormous un-
divided power of G. Britain the news from America began to be looked for with anxiety Victories gained by Americans were viewed as events of course, and their sympathies and admiration were completely entitled in our behalf. The American name stands high in the estimation of every country not immediately connected with G. B. and in France especially, where, not withstanding her claim of gratitudc on that redeemed people, for so long maintaining, and at last restoring to them their beloved Louis) to be known as an American is sufficient to ensure
a (1 ranger the courtefy, and even the carefles of every pari of the community. M v t

A Male Foundling Some days since, while a number of Philadelphia gentleman were skating on (the Delaware, a tea box was picked up on the ice, containing a living male infant 4 days old, carefully wrapped up in warm clothing The person who first got hold of the box, was deter mined to keep the child, although his companions were anxious for the prize.
