Not old Medusa's fabled head, "Whole dreadful eyes could turn, 'tis said The boldest form to stone ; E'er quench'd the blaze of mirth, or ty'd With magic spell, the form of pride, Like the aforesaid dun ! Hard fares alas I the luckless Wight Whole steps can, neither day or night, This rude tormentor shun; Who, at each corner, crook and turn. "Where'er his weary feet adjourn, Is haunted by a dun ! Ambition drops her busy schemes, Avarice awakes golden dreams, Blithe wit adjures his fun ; Pride sinks her bold aspiring craft, E'en potent Genius stoops opprest Before the mighty dun ! Muse ! tell how oft thy angel song, Has led my Captive soul along, With more than mortal tone ; How I, entranced whilst thou hast smiled, Have wak'd-- the sweet enchantment spoil'd By an intruding DUN ! Let toil my hazard limbs embrown, Let want and sickness weight me down, Gout, fever, cholic, stone ; Give me a scold in marriage noose, And e'en OLD NICK, himself let loose, But save me from a dun ! Pattoca, July 10th, 1812. Mr. Stout, ON looking over the 29th number of the Western Sun, I see his name affixed to an address to the people of the United States in vindication of the character of the militia Who served on the late campaign against the Shawnee Prophet and his partisans.---"That the militia have been basely slandered by the tongue ot calumny, as well as by the insidious pen of col. Boyd & captain Prescot is a circumstance of which I am well apprized--- but I was not present, nor did I act any part in that committee-- I now an nounce my entire approbation or that address with one solitary exception,-- it is there said "the militia were well pleased ar being put under the command of so distinguished an officer, &c."--I object to that statement, by asserting

that the men whom I had the honor to command, were never pleased at being put under the command at col. Boyd, though the respect we had for governor Harrison as well as the constituted authorities of our country in general induced us to submit to be commanded by col Boyd, however lightly we might esteem the table ot his Quixotic enterprizes in the Indies ; I am, however, convinced that the militia in general, treated col. Boyd with that respect which was due to their commanding officcr, nor do 1 believe that any part of the conduct of the militia could form a pretext for the unofficial and ungentlemanly conduct which was so familiar to the colonel during that campaign. And again, I do not wish to be considered one of that meeting which entered into the resolutions preceding that address, wherein John Badollet and Nathl. Ewing, have been perlbnally cenlut ed, as I am not fufficietitly acquainted With the cuxumllances of the meeting which it is faid they gave countenance to impro peily, to lay whether theil conduct vvas fuch as to deferve the levei e animadverlions eoi.taincd in that resolution or tut, and admitting their
