VIXCEXXES, July 27, 1811,
For fome days pad very confiderahle alarm has exifttd in this place nnd its neighborhood, accafioned by the approach of the Shawanoe chief, Tccumfeh, the brother of the Prophet, with a coniicierable number of Indians. The hoftile inttntions which have been fo unequivocally manifcfted by this infolent banditti, and the information which has- been conveyed from various fources, as well to our governor, as to general William Clark, the Indian agent at St. Louis, that it had been determined to furprife this place, were fufficient to excite the attention of the people, and that of the Executive of the territory. By captain Wiifon, whom we mentioned as having been fent fome. time fince on a million to the Prophet by the Governor, the former was informed that the Governor infilled upon his bringing but a fmall paity with him ins his contemplated vifit to this place ; with this injunction he poflitively promifed to comply. He has however violated his word, and he is now within a ttiort diitance of us with a number of men which are totally unneceflary, if peace is his obje5i, and which, but for the military preparations which the Governor has made, would be fufficient to fack & burn this town, and murder its inhabitants. Fifty-three canoes, have certainly been 'counted, bearing from two to ten men each, and there are
befides a number that have come by land; wc cannot eftimate the j
whole at kfs than 250 or 300$men thefe are visible ; what further number may be fecreled in the woods to the north of us, or are coming on, we know not -at any rate, appearances are fuch as to require that every precaution be taken. Since Sunday lad Tccumfeh has been within 70 or 80 miles of us with his band, and has not yet arrived---what can be the caufe of this delay, but to tire us out, and put us off our guard ? Every thing tends m.re fully to comlncc us of the propriety, ---nay, the abfolute neccfiity of the defenlive meafures adopted by our Execntive---and we feel confident that the prepara tions lor defence made by the gov crnor, will deter him at this time fiom mailing any attempt to put hi villanous fcheme into execution, or of its certain failure, fhouid he dare to undertake it. On Thurfday lad, cap Wiifon was lent up by the governor to meet Tccumfeh, and to afcertam the caufe of Ins de lay, and to know when he would l;e riowu---captaii Wiifon l etui ned yeHerday, tii?l re ports, ilj.it ;:ter a great deal o! e. vafion an 1 1 (pii oe.ition on the pai i of Tecumkh, he informed him hwould be lure to day. lie had, however, not arrived when ihii paper was put to pre fa.
The frigate EUex, "capt. Smith, has at length arrived in this country, having on board Win, Pinkney, efq. our late minifter to Great Britain, after a palfage of 40 days. On the fame day, a few hours before the Kfiex, arrived at Annapolis, the Britilh frigate Minerva, capt. Hawkins, of 32 gun?, having on board Augudus I. Foder, efq. the Britilh mini ler to our government. The Minerva failed from England fix or fever, days before the EfiVx. Mr. Pinkney arrived in this city on Sunday from Annapolis. Mr. Fofter reached the city on the fame day with his fuite. By the EUex difpatches are received from France, the contents of which rumor has not yet wafted to our ears. Nat. Int.
A report is in circulation, (from what authority we are unable to learn) that the frigate Prefident has been captured after a hard conteded a&ion, by three Britilh frigates. We place very little reliance on the report. Argus.
