I'l&'CLA'XES, July 1 3,
The Lullidna Gazette of the 27th June, confirms the report of the mui dei s committed in the Illinois and Louifuna territories by the Indians, pnbhlhed in our laft, with the addition of another man beir.s found murdered at the foot of Clinton II til, and of a number of horfos having been Rolen fiom that neighborhood. The. fame paper alfo fays, " that the Prophet calculates on being able to colled all the Putavvatamics &. Saukies, two thirds ot the Kick, -apoos, a confiderable number of Ottowas, ami a fmall portion of the Shawanoes two or three hundred of thefe Indians have gone by invitation to fort Maiden for arms & ammunition. " The poll-ruler from Kalkafkla, informs, that the whole country is up in arms, and all the out fettlements in forts what meafurts the executive of that territory, will, in this exigency refort to, we cannot pretent to foretell or, what, at this time would be the molt proper
xcourfe for our executive; That lb'mcthing Humid be done, and that fpeedily, we think all will agree. The injury our country full a ins by the fc repeated alarms is incalculable they (lop the influx of cmigrants, damp all fpirit of enterprife, and deftroy the peace quiet of our citizens. We hope this will not long 6e permitted, that prompt and efficient men fu res will be immediately taken by the general government to infure the fafety of our citizens, and teach the prophet the impotency of his threats. In addition to the above we are authorifed to fay, that capt. Wilfon, who was lent by the governor to the Prophet's town, to demand an explanation of his conduct in taking thj Ul States fait, lias returned, and repor ts that the Prophet refufed to give any explanation , but faid his brother Tecum, seh, would vilit the governor in IS
or 20 clays, and fettle the affair with him. Capt. Wilfon further reports that tile Prophet informed him, that his young men had gone by invitation irom the Britilh, to fort Maiden to receive a large quantity of goods. s
his guns unluckily went o(T. This
induced the com. to explain the .accident to the Bntifh otllcer, which was received with great polite m fs ; after thefe civilities were exchanged, &. fmce then tin v have been in light of each other on terms of friendlhip. Thf accidental going off of the cannon is not to be wondered at when it is recollected that the frigate's guns arc difcharged with locks and not with matches. Wc are informed thnt Walter Rogers, the boywounded on hoard the Prehdent, and who behaved with fo much firmnefs, has been appointed a midlhipman in the navy of the U. States. Nat. Int. Young Rodgers, the lad who received all the wounds furtained by the crew of the Prtfidentin the engagement with the Little licit, and who has been rewarded with a midfhipman's warrant for his gallantry wc fear, from what we learn, is on his voyage to that country in which the commiflions of the president are of no tffecl. YVe hope he may recover, if he does not, however, the regard paid to his bavery is very proper in government, and will excite to emulation and valor on future occufions. N. T. paper.
It has been remarked, that the paiTengcrs who have lately arrived, and are dai:y arriving from Ireland, are principally nu n of refpeelability and propc; ty. The w hole number that will have arrived here by the midvlie ot July, will amount to about aooo.
