We are informed by a gentleman from St. Louis, that about 10 days ago, a party of Indians (Tup. poled to be the Putawatamies) attacked an American family living about 3U miles tothe fouth ead ot Cahokia, when the father and mother being from home, the Indians killed one of the fons, and took a daughter prilbner. When the parents returned, an alarm was raiftd, and capt. Whitefides with a party of volunteer Americans purlued after the favages ; on the 3d day they came up to a camp but jnft deferred by the Indians, where they found the daughter, tomkawked in fundry places, but dill podefimg life in returning home with the girl, they met a party of Indians, of whom they killed two. Captain Whitefides and his patriotic party, in redlining their icouting, came up with a party of forty warriors ! We fay warriors, becaufe they were unprovided with either horfes or women but captain Whitefides finding this num. l)er of favages too firong for his finall band of citizens, found it prudent and advifable to return to

States frigate Prcfident, commodore Rogers, law a flrane fail at a great diftance, refembling a fhip of war, and immediately Itood lor her. About 9 o'clock P. M. came up with the fiiip and hailed h?r. On enquiring who fi)e was, the commodore received no anfwer. He again enquired who and what (lie was, and received two cannon balls by way of anfwer, one of which wounded one of tits feamen. Commodore Rogers upon this, returned a finglr fiiot, which was anfwered by a full broadfide. The commodore, not to be behind hand with his antagoniQ, returned a broadfidc from the Prcfident which loon terminated the centeft.
