A report has been circulated through this country by fome perfon or perfons, with an intention of injdringmy character, refpcYmg the colle&ion of fine money in the (late of South Carolina, the untruth of the report will appear from the followincertificates. three dollars, that is, a part of the abcre five dollars, 1 then, having fome money in my hand, at that inftant I offered to pay to the faid captain Batey the faid three dollars, on his giving me a receipt, he faid he had no need of it then then I faid to him, that I would pay it to him, or his order, at any time that he called on me for it, I alfo do fay on my oath, that captain Comer and myfelf had not any private converfation, neither on that day, nor at any time or place, about the above mentioned 6ne money, and that I never did have occafion or defign to favor him in any wife about the bufinefs, nor had I any intention to wrong any perfon or perfons, cr the company of the faid captain Batey, neither through fear favor or affccYion, and I further fay on my oath, that I did not, neither that day re
