IT has ever been, and dill is, the wifli of the Editor to exclude from his columns ny thing which might have a tendency to introduce religious controverfy hut, when from the general, indeed .timed unanimous felicitation of his readers, he is convinced fuch is their wifh, he can feel no hefitation in admitting the following. Ed. Sun. AN ATTEMPT TO D EVE LOPE SHAKE RIS3I. by James Smith, Esqtt About five years ago, three (bakers, viz. Iffacher Baits, John Mitchan & Benjamin Young, came to Kentucky, where 1 then rcfided, but was abroad in the date of Tenneflfee. On my return to my fon, James Smith's in Ky. vrhere I had my home, I found he had joined the (Inkers, I knew very little about them, but foon after they having collected a party on Turtle creek, in the date of Ohio, I afked the above mentioned Baits, if I might go and live with them fome time, to fee what fort of people they were to which he agreed. I accordingly went ; and from that time to the prefent, 1 have diligently endeavored to find them out, (which is truly difficult,) and I think I have fucceeded in a good degree. They artfully and infiduoufly conceal their real views and principles, from thofe whom they wifh to profelyte to their fcheme The main thing necelTary todoptheprogrefs of fhakr-rifm, is, for manking to know what it is 1 flitll therefore endeavor plainly to relate what I have difcovered, and as I intend principally to confine myfelf to matters of fatt, I hold myfelf in readinefs to prove the truth of what I (hall afiert, if required. I (lull firft give fome account of the (bakers faith, and fecondly, of their practice. x Ifr. That our mother Eve, is what is meant by the forbidden fruit, the woman being prohibited from all animals, fave. Adam only, Sc Ihe, contrary to the command, had carnal knowledge of the ferpent that this fird fin followed the whole human race ; and that mankind can never be rcdored to their priminitive hciinefs and happinefs, without a life of celibacy and abdiuence, from copulation between the fexes. This they call taking up the full crufs. 2d. Tim all who do not confefs their fins to the m, and receive the tedimony of God from thrm, will certainly be damned, and go to hell. 3d. The makers deny the peifonality of C'mft, faying that the mm Thrift Jefus, Ii3d no more to do with our f .Ivation, than any other man who had received the uncion, rr.ly as he ws a patron for a I iff of celibacy. 4th. That the man who was crucified wa3 not Chrift. but the untion or fpirit of him only wa; Chift, and that this uncYimi or fpirit has come in a mo'e poweriul manner into a woman callrd Anna L"e, who h Chrift's ferond coming without fin unto f! vation. who have been martyrs for chriflianity hate gone to hell. 8th. That all who come to them and confefs their fins, (hall be delivered out of hell, except fuch as have in this life received their tefiimony and afterwards left thrm, and fpread abroad what they had feen and heard while among them. 9th. That the ftriptuies of the old and new tefiament are true & foretold to them, yet they are not the word of God, nor a rule to them. That they are in a new difpenfation, St have received a new revelation, being immediately infpired by the fpirt of God, above what the Applies ever were ; and that none can underfiand the fcriprures of the old 8c new tefiameut aright, hut fuch as recejve their explanation from them 10th. That the day of judgment is come, that they with thou funds of Saints and Angels are now judging the world, and that they can fee Angels and fpirits which to others arc invifible. 1 1 th, That the general conflagration has now taken place, the fire is now kindled which will burn the woild, viz. a life of celibacy, the human race not being prop.tgut ed, there will not one be left on tlie fce of the earth. Then the earth will he burnt up, but not by material fire. For the fat. isfadion of my readers, I fliall here infrrt fome information, which I received hem perfons who have been a eonfiderblc time with the fiukers, and'have left them, which may afford farther light refp-c?.ing the (bakers faith ; and alfo give fome idea of their practice, which is the fecond thing I propofed. As the perfons appear to be afhamed of having b-en (bakers, I fiiall not infert their names. On March 13th, 1810, I called on one who had been three years with the (bakers. He -fa id he had formerly been a member of the methodifl fociety, and wa then happy in the enjoyment of vital religion, but was not fo while with the (bakers ; moreover, that the arbitrary authority and hard ufae exerc ifed over the working bauds, was intolerable. He alfo added, that is was e-fy joining the (bakers, but hard to' get free from them. The fame evening I had an interview with three others, who were alto getheyj: one of winch had been 18 months, another near 3 years, the other 3 years with thr (bakers. They fay the only ufe the (bakers make of the Bible is to g-in prof eiytes. That as to themfelves. they view it in the fame light as an old A!nnn4c that whu is lookeri or diftittd by elder l)i. vid, muft be received by them ,s the word of God : and as he is efteenieJ iuf!Ish!r, implicit faith and obrdience muft be given to all his precept this tht-y ell believing and obeying God. Thofe men fay that in general their education tf children is chiefly a pretence, that their principle leaders on !y are well educated. They do not approve of thofe of a lower rank reading any books they are taken from fchool as foon as they are fit for other bufmefs. Elder David has taught the dialers thaC when aifaulted by the men of the world they may borrow their own fpirit and brat their They further Hate, tht the (Inkers told them, if they bore the rrofs, and abfiained from woman for f me tin e, they would become fo holy that it would be no fin for them to have carnal knowledge of their own holy women. But that it would be wrong for thera to have 1 hildre n, as it would be a bed example to the wo hi, and might prevent them from livr. in celibacy fo s to berome holy.
