Wc have received the fubjoined addrefs from our cor refpondent in Weft Florida, as the refult of the firft meeting
of the convention. From this addrefs it will appear that W. Florida (till acknowledges dependance on the government of Spain, and is firm in her allegiance to Ferdinand 7. It will alfo appear that there is
to be a fecond meeting of the convention, on Monday the 13th inft. which it is believed will be much more interefting than the laft. What wilj be the refult of the deliberations
of this honorable body, is yBt impoflible to divine, however,
as far as we are capable of
judging, their proceedings auger well. A degree of pru
dential wifdom marks the tint
meeting, that does honor to
the deputies, and we fincerely
hope that nothing may occur to diflurb the tranquility, or
endanger ahe peace and tran
quility of the people. Idle demagogues and de
claimers may endeavor to alarm the fears of the people,
and mav threaten them tvith
French vengeance ; but i fje deputies are faithful to Flori
da, adhere firmly to principle,
and purfuea wife and juft policy, they will acquire for themfelves immortal honor, and fecure a free & equitable government to their polterity.
As far as we have feen an expreffion of public fentiment there is nor an A merican heart that does not beat in unifon with the people of Florida ; and the prayers of 7 millions ot freemen are daily offered up to the fountain of all good, for the civil and political freedom, and univerfal profperity ot our enlightened neighbors. I he people of the U. States and Florida have the fame
feeling, the fame object in view, the fame end to accomplifb they are all natives ot this foil, and they mult preferve it inviolate never mult they permit this hallowed haunt of liberty to be polluted
by the followers of theCoifi can. Let the Florida conven tion caft a retrofpeftivc eye over the miferics of Spain, & remember that thefe evils have been brot' upon her by the intrigues of French tories, and that torrents of blood, limilar to thole which have flowed in the mother country will deluge this happy land, the moment they are led af tray by the fyren fongs of toryifm.
