Kings, merchants, fpcculators, gamblers, lawyers, mendicants ck lhe like. What ? is the merchant to be profcribed and the blemngs of commerce to be forgotten ? No, the merchant is the great link or mutual agent between the laborers and manafaclurers, ckc. of different Hates. In that, his proper fphere, he is eminently ferviceable but dangerous out of it k Woe be to that country which is governed that is, exclufively by merchants or priefts " What is the mod common evil propagated by mercantile purfuits and adventures ? The growth of luxury', gaudy fplendor, extravagant magnificence in living, equipage, &c. cauled by great and fudden fortunes. The contagious infeclion fpreads like a peflilence through fociety : the poor ape the rich ; the frog is burlt by mimicking the oxVand wickednefs and immorality, are the inevitable confequences of fuch prepoRerous luxury. What is the bell antidote to thefe evils? The encouragement of induftry or uleful labor : the farmers, mechaincs&c manufaclurers are "the fait of the earth," who keep found the body politic, which would otherwife rot above ground.
