POETICAL ASVLUM, THE SCHOOL MISTRESS. A Village Dame once taught a fchool, And really thought herfelf no fool ; With dignity maintained her flition, And taught the rifing generation. She knew her letters; and could read, With help of fpelling,. it waV fald But never at a Qfs jwas'UnoAyiry xFor a&ive fancy help'd her on,' And guefllng words, Hie did maintain, Was faviwg trouble, time and pain. A little boy who was not idle, Had bee promoted to the Bible, And met a word that made him quake (ouch as old Mofcs lov'd to make, And to his children did bequeath. The petticoat-great coat, is quite the rage among our young bucks. When this article of drefs firlt came into vogue, a New H;:mpfhire waf; afiertrd that it was the refultof the hxtalionis the ladies had been long (hiving to wear the breeches (inexprciTiMcs we mean) and our young men by way cf giving a Rowland for an Oliver, had mounted the petticoat upon their (boulders. MISCE L L A Ar T. Mr. Stout. By giving the folloivin? eloquent oration of Felix Grundy, Esrjr. at thejuncralqf Col. Bar dp Mirfree a place in your paper, you Kill oblige a Constant Reader, JVcrshipJul master 2 and brethren, A melancholy event has called us together this is no mafonic iellival clay, fo far from it the genius of mifonry has cloathul herfc If in mourning, lhc has hung her harp upon the willow-tree ; with us her Ions and votaries, there is at prcfent no joy but the joy uf grief, iince he who flood in the call and prciiUcU ever all cur labours is not 1
to be found In the walls of Ills lodge ; fincc he who illumined our proceflions by his mafonic lights is no where to be feen. His Ipirit has departed, it has taken its flight, it has fought that undifcovered country from whose bourn no traveller returns. Here lies his body in the cold embraces of unfeeling death thofe : eyes which lately beamed with intelligence are clofed in eternal fleep that arm which once taught fear to the enemies ot his country, now lies by his lide lifelefs and unftrung. For you, my brothers, the per
formance of a folenm and facrcd duty remains our deceafed mafter is to be interred, according to thecudom of mafons : in doing this ; your external ceremonies are to be berformed in fuch a manner, that none of the ancient landmarks of mafonry be removed : fbureafts mufhrifc he, attuned to gnet, lor with a holy iorrow mal onry commands us to mourn over the tomp, of a brother. ou will therefore proceed but before you do this by your permiflion, worfliipful matter I will addrefs this waiting and expecting audience, and if poflible remove from their minds thofe unjud prejudices which exiits agamic our order, 1 wait worfhipful mailer, to know your pleafure. The mafler replied go on brother. My Friends. It is now lawful for mc to fpeak to you and to a certain extent explain the principles of mafonry ; but our myderies, cannot be revealed our fecret works the world can never know. They are locked up in the faithful bofoms ol mafons ; that tongue that would attempt to divulge them would be. come motionlefs the mouth that would attempt to make them publie, would loofe its powers ol utterance. Mafonry, teaches us to confider God, as the author and founder of 'ur inflitution : we view him as the great architect of Heaven and Earth we date our origin from die beginning of time when God laid " Let there be light, and there was light," mafonry began. We call him our father and our God who by his omnipotent fiat caufed worlds innumerable, with all their inhabitants, to rife up and be. In his revealed word we difcover the flrongefl evidence of the antiquity and purity of our inflitution. Our grand mafler Solomon, whole intimate connection with us, i known to every mallcr-mafon, was felected by the great ruler of die Heavens and of the Earth, to build a Temple in honor of the true and living God. In the exe. cution of this building, which was dehgncd to contain the Ark of the covenant of the Lord mafons ofevcry order and degree werr mrmlnv. cd. There God himlelflW4 communed with his workmen faItructed them, and increafL-d their architectural (kill. The Building of thk Tpmnhforms an important and intrrrflini: epoch in the hiflory of mufnnrv Icenes there took place which arcno where recorded, but in thp nn. nals of mafonry feencs of which
the world mud remain ignorant, but every mafler mafon lus a lively recollection of Mount Moriah, the fping of Gallia, and the railing of the dead. In later times we fee the favorites of Heaven, St. John the evengelid, and the holy St. John the devine, adbciating with mafons ; thofe holy minillers of Heaven, who were commifiioncd to reveal the will of God to man, well knew that mafonry was not inimical to that religion which they taught ; they difcovcred between the principles of religion and mafonry. a perfect coincidence; therefore, by their indullry became among the brighted ornaments of our order, in honor of each we now hold an annual fcdival. Were it nccefiary for me to go through the lid of the pious and illuflrious members of our fociety lilhoujdjuune to.you the great and worthy of all nations and countries, for mafonry has at all times been deemed honorable. Kings, have often put afidc the regidia of their offices, to aflame the more dignified badges of mafonry ; conquerors have laid do wn their arms to be 'cloathed in the peaceful habiliments of our order. The divine precepts of mafonry have taught them to fheath the conquering fword and ceafe to deftroy their brothers for mafonry delights in peace. God would not permit his fervant David to build a houfe unto his name becaufe he had made great wars, and had Ihcd much blood upon the earth, in the light of the Lord. He chofe his fon Solomon, a man of peace, to erect that holy place in which the ark of covenant and iacred veflels were to be kept. ' Mafonry recognizes as her fon, the chief hero of our revolution. Walhington tinder whofe eye and command, this our brother, fought was alfo a mafon long he prefided as grandmader over the Virginia lodges! In the fchool of mafonry, he imbibed that flrong love of country which dictated his conduct he there learned to feel lor and relieve opprefled humanity ; and can it be believed, that this father of his country would have cherifhedand nourilhed within his boiom, an inditution unfriendly to morality or religion ? I charge you not to flander his name by fuch an imputation the united voice of a world will condemn vou. All other inllitutions are liable to change mafonry is immutable ; fuch as it was in the beginning, it has remained and ever will continue. Kingdoms and empires rife and flourifh and tumble into ruins, but mafonry is budt upon a rock that cannot be fhaken ; it is the fame in all nations and countries. Mafons from the mod extreme quarters of the earth, meet together ultho' flrangers to the language of their different countries they recognize each other as brothers and converge in the fublime language of mafonry. If dillrefs fhouid have fallen to the lot of either, the heart of the other is poured out towards him in cop,ous dreams of benevojence fhouid poverty attend him lus brother opens his purfc and
fupplies his wants. Nor arc thefe the only eflects of mafonry ; in the dav of battle it has performed mi-
I r-irles ? mafons in hodile armies have met in the field intent on death and (laughter alone, their armsv have been raifed againft each odicr the fpirit of mafony weeps to fee her fons imbrue tneir nanus m their brother's blood, flic freaks to them in the dill drong voice of mafonry, and tells them they arc brodier's their weapons of death fall from their hands, and inilead of receiving the cold fteel of death, each receives the imbraces of a friend. Often when all other means have failed, mafonry has loofencd the chains of the bondmen, and fet the captive free. Even in the hour of death, mafonry, holds out her comforts to her followers : when that dreadful conflict arrives when thofe awful apprqhenfions, (or the profperity of 'the'widjow 8c the fatherlefs all prefs upon the mind, mafonry kindly deps in and gives relief ; fhe informs the departing mafon that he has left behind him thofe who will be mindful of his widow and remember his little ones. Yes thofe who will regard her as a fider, and protedt her from poverty, iniferjv, and infuit, thofe who will watch over the conduct of his children with thetendernefs of a father, and teach them to avoid vice and tread in the paths oi virtue and propriety. It may be aked if mafonry be fa ancient and pure in its principles how does it happen that fome mafons are to be found fo abandoned anddiflblute in their manners and principles ; to this a ready aniwer may be given. No intthution or profeflion known to man, is ex empt from this charge. Shew me that religious fociety on earth, that has been able to guard itfelf front fraud and impofitip.V ; there are ia all focieties, wolves in fheep's cloathing ; even, when the Saviour of the world was on earth he chofe to himfelf twelve difciples and in that fmall number there was a traitor there was a Judas. Is it then wonderful that notwithdanding all that caution and circumfptction ufed by mafons members are fomtimes admitted. who area difgrace to themfelves and their profeflion. Whenever this is difcovcred every art is employed by, our fraternity to reclaim him ; if all means fail ne is expelled from our lodges he becomes an out-cad among mafons a mark is fet upon him by which mafons know and avoid him his name is blotter! out from amongft us, that fo vile a wretch may no longer be remembered. In doing this we endanger not a difelofure of our myderies and facrcd rites mafonry has fixed leal upon his hps which no man can break ; he is dumb on mafonic fubje&s, he goes weeping forrowing all his davs. My Friends Difmifs all your prejudices againd our order, draw C Concluded in third page. fROM THE PRESS OF E.
