SELF-DEFENCE causes me to answer your piece. If you had stated facts, and fixed truth as your guide, I should have let you sliped off into silent contempt, the merited reward of court hirelings.--Was it possible to bring myself to believe that you are the real and sole author of your essay of falsehood against me, I should have pityed the corrupt wanderings of your mind, and the turpitude of your heart ; but when I am creditably informed that you are not the real author, I consider you as the Jaccal of the times ; the pander of power and the proud sycophant of the day ; who is trying

In the Western Sun of the 3d of March I have read the certificate of a John M'Donald, said to be an Esqr. and gentleman. stating a conversation that should have taken

place in mr. Badollet's office, between mr. Badollet him and myself, relative to the consistency of our votes at the last election, and stating that mr. Badollet and me, had informed him that John Johnson had pledged himself to us to oppose the introduction of slavery should it be brought on the carpet. Who this John M'Donald, Esq. is, I am at a loss to know--but in justice to John Johnson, and to the cause of truth, I do declare that he never pledged himself to me to oppose slavery or any other measure, nor did I ever ask him to do it--and that I never told John M'DonaJd esq. John M'Donald gentleman, or any other John, that he had, nor did I ever hear mr. Badollet tell him or any other person so. NATHE. EWING March 13th, 1810. I have read with no little surprise a certicate of John M'Donald, relative to mr. Ewing and myself. On which I'll observe that I have but a very faint recollection of the conversation said to have taken place betwen the said M'Donald on the subject of our votes in favor of mr. John Johnson for the legislature. This much I recollect.
