The chief cbj-c however, of t'ue prefect addrcia to t!ie public, is, like all Authors, to piifT ourfelvcs Into notice ; fet forth our literary pretention?, and rflablilh incontrovertably, that we are as well atquainted with the ClaiTics, the Sciences, Trades and Pjffrffions, as the mother that bore us. By this method likewife, we expeel to command the attention and patronage of our countrymen. Wc warn all perfons not to -o:u!erii our woiks thro'i prejudice, w itbout having read thorn ; ior j-recipitately and ungeucroully to feoff at them, becaufe they have the misfortune of being an offspring of the wild woods of Kentucky ; but we intveat t'lem to join wifh us to feller the native renins ' of our ftate-; trim the untried pinions ol tlie Wt ftern TMufe ; awake the twir.ds of our Free born Youth from their lethargy ; and open before their eyes, in delightful profpeft, intellectual folds which they may be iuticed to explore. We arc proud to inform the public, that the gates of our Garden are now thrown open; and we invite them to enter in ; examine its productions, arid. contemplate its beautiei. Within it, Apollo reigns, who, to charm our courteous viiitors, lhail ling original verfes to divine airs ; and enrich its fcenery with all the decorations which can delight a refined imagination ; and the Mifcellaneous Muff, Hull fcatter in the pathway of our fpe&ators, il Flowers of all hue and without thorn, the rose.1' In the mean while jolly faced Wit, (hall hang an Epigram, Pun or Anecdote, on every Tree, to entertain- our vifitor3i We have endlefs variety in "our Garden, and know how, to join bitter aud fweet, and charm by novelty even the Thiftle and Nettle are not wanting there; by which the rude critic, who endeavours to defpoil oar. flowers, will be ftiiMg nor are wc without "Crab-Apples, and green Perfimffius, with which wc will undertake at any tiry: to ftiffen, au4 make rough, the fniooth and nimble tongues of flandevcrs. In fliort all kinds of yejbs that ever entered into the Medical Vocabulary of an old dame, we h.ve, and mean to have in our Garden ; whether efficacious iu eafmgthe heart-ach ; in f othing the troublous pa (lions ; in cleanfiug the corrupt foals of men ; or in fiimulating and enlivening the flunid fenfes. Lealf fome conceited youth may take it into his brains (head we mean) tojueftion our literary abilities, we here give -fuch a fpecimen of our acquirements, that we are confident no one will have the boldnefs to interrupt us hereafter. We, therefore, inform the Doctors, that we know Eftulnpius was deified, and that the bed methods of curing the tooth-ach arc u arc to boil your head well, and then (hake all vour teeth out, or to fill your mouth with water and hold it ever the fire until it boils. M The Military man and Duclid, we inform, that guns and gun-powder, were invented by S.varts, a Monk of Cologn. The Belles' and Beaux, we inform, that Queen Eliza

In the department ot Criticifm, we will fometimes appear ; and fuch is our boldnefs, that we flt-ll not heiitate to attack the huged Folio's, the Columbiad not excepted. But we more par tii uhnly declare ourfilvrsthe Guaidiins ot Morality, and the Iworn foes to all manner of Vice. We eaineQly invite the correfpondence ot the Youths of the Wed, and all men of Letters; and wilh their communications to coniid in Moral, Scientific, Diverting, Literary fubjefts, or fuch as relate to the fafliionable world.
