FOR THE WESTERN SUN. Mr. Editor, HAVING by mere accident he?rd that J. B. 1 nomas, (alias Judge Thomas J fince his arrival at KafktTku has fallciy endeavored to imprefs the people in that quarter with a behef'that I never whifpered any thing derogatory to his character, untiil after his departuie from this place ; in order therefore to lhew what degree of credit the aficrtions of the Jude drferve, I hereto fubjoin a certificate limned by a number, of perfons in this place ; and I take this method of reminding Judge Thomas, that although he is at more than arms length diltance, and may feel himfelt fecure on one, fcore, yet he is not out of the reach qf my pen ; and that as foon as ltifurc ferves, 1 fliall prepare a complete hif tory of the Judge, fiotn the time of his Mercantile infamy until the period of his appointmentment on the Bench of the 11 linois Territory - which fliall be publilhed for the benefit of thofe on whofe lives and property he is appointed to decide. 'Men, bafe, and cowardly indeed mufl that man br, who would be terrified by the threats of firch a mileiable wretch as Judge Thomas. He might in fact, (if any fuch there are) ftand a competition wijh the Judge himfclf for the palm of infamy and degradation. JAMES DILL. Laurenceburgh, 18th OcL 18U9.
We do certify that a publication in m--nufcript purporting to he a expofition ot thef.ondud of Jtlle B. Thomas, dated the 19th of April, 1809, and figntd, James Ddl was left in the different public houfes iii Laiuenccburgh, for the infoedlion Ec examination of any per fen who might wifti to fee it, at left ten days before tbe departure of J. B. 'Fhomas fir KiffCdikia, and we further certify it as our belief that Judge 'Fhomas. (if he did not fee the publication) ws well acquainted with its contents. Jabez PercivJ, Saml. C. Vance, Fhos. Wardell, Jacob Warner, Win. Wilfon, aml. Craw;, Clumber Poller, Stephen Ludlow.
I attribute in a great degree, to the immoderate and unnecelrary profufion with whu h the public money is lavilhed. This Uud is tythablc, and being lately called on fur an increafe of the annual payment in refpecA to my great tythes, 1 wrote a letter lo the inhabitants of Godv.lming, near to which my farm lies, which is lb exadlly illufli ative of the prcfeiit tituation of the country, that with your ptrmillion I will take the liberty of reading ir. Whatever coinci? deuce there may appear between this let ter aud'thc objcdl of this meeting, I can tlTure you that tven the rtquiiition was at that time not known by me to be contemplated. You will obferve, that in the account of the expenditure of the farm, the ux on our horfes is accidentally omitted and the truth on that fubjett is, t hat the tax gatherer are lb numerous and undeterminable, that 1 really forgot to infert it lb that the lUtement is really below the real amount of expenditure in rates, taxes and tythes. My houfe too being on a fcale fomewhat more extenlive than that which would be deemed rrquifite for the occupation of a firm of this extent, I did not think fair to include the houfe and window tax. A fanner to be fure mull luve a houfe that is, it he can get one in the prefent alarming and deplorable Hate of the country, read read! Mr. Townfend then read the following letter.
