ANECDOTES.
As two rultic neighbors was talking together on a late market day, in Dromore fays one to the other, Can you tell me Paddy, what makes candles fo dear this feafon ? Why the war, replied the other. Lord bless us! (cried Pat ) arc they going to fight by candle light V M ISC EL L ANT. THE PERPETUAL COMPLAINT. Being among the number of thofe with whom mankind is conftantly diffuisfied, I beg leave to fubjoin my complaints to thofe that hve occafionally introduced them to the public, through the channel of your communications. When I tell you I am as old as Time hirnfelf, you will allow, that on the fcore of longevity I ought to be rrfpected; and when I add that I am venerable in my appearance and temperature, as mortals themfrlves, you will alfo be difpofed to grant that I am not to be re probitrd on the fcore of inconfiftency. Yet fo it is, that even though I fremingly take piins to accomodate my variable difpofitions to tbr variable difpofitions of mankind, thr circumftancr producrs no iVmp3-tht-tic congeniality between us ; und my incotiftancy is rendered proverbial, while their own propenfity to fickelnefs never occurs to thrir recolleaion. Yes Sir I have roqmrrcl with the world on the fubjeel, of ind.fiVrence, neglect, or difregard ; for I inult confrfs every body pays me due attention ; I am irqired after every .light and every morning, and am fo much the topic of ccmvrrtatioii, and f regularly introduced alter the cuilocmy greetings of tcrcmo-
iual intercourfe, that I may he faid to be a kind of ucceflary alTiftant to converfation : for when people are barren of ideas, I am always at hand to fupply the vacuity of their minds; yet I am fcarcely mentioned in any other light but as the fource of complaint and dilTatisfadUon, and without having fome opprobrious epithet attached to my name. Some times I am accufed of being too warm in my behaviour, fometimes too cold. If I finile unexpectedly, I am fufpe&ed of harboring treacherous defigns ; and men fay to one another 'farcaftically, " We (hall pay for this 1" If I continue xny placid deportment, and am mild, fwcet, and amiable, for any length of time, I ani faid to be good humored even to fatiety. Some wifh me to weep when I am difpofed to be merry, and fome to be gay when I am inclined to be fad. Thick, dull, nafty, are epithets commonly applied to me. If I am ftill, I am faid to be vaporifli if loud, boifterous and rude. Aches, pains, rheumatifm, & mooting corns, are often attributed to my influence. In fliort, fir, I am fo wretched, fo cenfured, To abufed, every day, that it would feem as if I were a Granger upon earth, and born but yerterday rather than an inhabitant of Paradifr, known to Adam and Eve, and one who was prefent at the Creation. But I will nor detain you any longer, Sir, for I fee you ore looking at me through the window, and meditating an interveiw with your very old acquaintance, THE WEATHER.
