the number mud be great, but in want of arms." Capt. Allen from Lilbon, favored us with papers to June 5. Lisbon, June 1. Letters from Orense on the Minho, May 18, mentions Soults palling that place in his retreat from Portmrl. Kom ina's army is now computed at 18 000, and expectations are entertained of increating it to 40,000. Komaua is gone to Ovitda in Allurias, to perform fame duty cntmtted to him by the Junta. The forrender of Ferrol and Corunna by the French is expected. The Britifli have a fquadron before thofe places.
In confenuence of the affertion of mar
Ihal Soult, to intimidate the Portuguefe that he was about to be reinforced by 80,000 French foldiers, the Bri:i(h gen. Beresfoid publilhed in Lifbon pipers, the following intercepted letter from gen. Kellerman to the marlhal. The folerr.nity with which gen. B. has made the publication, as well as the exifting fUte of affairs of France, permit no doubt of its authenticity. Valladolid, March 31. " SIRH is imperial majefty having ordered the duke of Iftria to join him has intruded to me the command of the French forces in Upper Spain. I received the letter which you wrote; him from 1 fend copies thereof to his imp-rial majefty, and the prince of Nufchatel, and tranfmitted the letter which was addrefiVd to the dukr to his highnefs. Marlhal Beflieris fet out for Germany on the 19th inft. and the imperial guard, with every perfon belonging to the imperial houfehold. On the 20th war agaiuft Auliria was declared ; but it is not yrt known whether the emperor will proceed to the Inn, or Tagiamenta. My petition in Spain is rather critical ; but I occupy the plain country, with a confiderabL body of horfe, although I am deftitute of infantry. I am watching the movements of the army of Afturians, and of the troops of Komana, who ohftrudl our communication with the provinces they occupy. I am not able to do what I could wifh, but fent frrong reconnoitring parties to Bragantz Sc iMiranda, and do 11 1 can to keep the people between this place and Madrid in order, whom I know to he disaffecVd. Your brother has arrived here, but I do not fee bow he will he able to rejoin as he wiftVs. The war in Germany produced by the intrigues Sc gold of Britain, cannot but be attended with the mnft dreadful confVquences for us, and mutt for the prefent render our lituation extremely critical. ' Ynu cannot exp-cl any reinforcements Uiilefs the duke of Elchicren lhould he able to fend you fomr, of which I cannot judge, as 1 have not thelraft communication with him; and ajl Gallicia is in a ftate of infurredlion. I fend you this letter by a perfon in whom 1 place nmrh confidence, and who
is worthy of yours, &c.
