THE WESTERN SUN.
VINCENNES, J.ir 6, 1809. Wc have this day received information from St. Louis, which puts beyond a doubt, the hoftile difpofitions of the Indians of the JMiHiilipni. They have it appears attempted to take fort Bclvu, but happily did not fucceed. It affords us great pleafure to Hate that governor Harrifon, has authorifed us to fay, that nothing has occurred to induce him to change his opinion of the friendly difpoiition of the Wabaih tribes. The malicious rancour with which the tories in our country purfue the late prefidentof the U. S. the vile charges and infinuations which are continually thrown out againft him in the numerous papers which are fubjec to their controul, ought to ftrengthen the love and afTcclion which every true American bears to this diflinguifhrd patriot they (tht tories) can never blot from their memories the fervices he has rendered to the caufe of liberty, nor forgive his inimitable expofure of their mailers crimes and follies in the declaration of independence. . Nor are they fatisfied with pouring upon him a cepious dream of flandcrand detraction An ample fliareof it reaches every branch of his family. They not only 4 vifit the fins of the father upon the children,' but his collateral relations wno become candidates for any ofHceln the gift of the people, are made to feel the ef. fcttsof his demerits One of the candidates to reprefent the county of Knox at the late election is a near relation of mr. JefFerfon. 1 tIs to be hoped that we have no tories amongft us but if there is a single individual of that defcription in Vin cennes or its neighborhood, he will he found to have ufed againft the gentleman alluded to, every vile infinuation which malice could fuggf ft. or which fear of perfonal chaftifement would allow him to give utterance. A. To the Electors in the Electoral District composed of the Townships of Busseron, Palmyra and rtr, cennes. Carolina, was confumetl by fire, and with it, three of his fons, aged 17, 14, and 10 years. A fourth fon, about 21 years old, in cfcaping through the flames, was fo much burnt that it is thought he will not recover.
A dreadful fire broke out in a hatter's (hop in Richmond, (Va.) on the 2rth March, which deflroyed upwards of a fquare of the beft part of the town.
On the 14th March, the large cotton manufactory at Bloomfield near New-Ark, New Jerfey, toge. ther with all its contents, was entirely confumed by fire.
A moll (hocking murder was lately, committed in Hanover, York county, on mr. Henry Young innkeeper, by John Charles, a mulatto. Young had relieved him Irom embarraffment, and taken him into his fervice. After he had committed the murder he dole one of Young's horfes, and made off he was purfued, and taken at New-Market, in Maryland.
Sailed from New-York, on the 24th in the afternoon, with a fair wind the Dilpatdh fhips Pacific and Mentor, for Falmouth and L'Orient. NEWS. We have been politely favored with the following extract of a letter from a refpectable mercantile houfe in Baltimore to one in this city. If we take into view the immenfe refourees of Bonaparte the rapidity of his movements the enterprifing character of his veterans the recent and concurrent details of French victories the want of concert in the allied armies, and the fhameful delay of the Britifh troops, determine us in the behalf, that the extract may be relied on as authentic. Baltimore, March 20. " A veflel has this inftant arrived in this port from the Havanna, in a lhort palfagc of ten days. bhe brings advices that a difpatch veirel had arrived there having left Cadiz on the lit February, with important information to the go. vernmrnt. The news has leaked out, and it appears that the com. bined Britilh and Spamlh armies had furretulered to the potent power of Bonaparte. Jt is likewife Hated, that the Kngliih troops ir. Portugal were obliged to capitulate. The Britilh property taken the French in Spain and Portugal is computed to be adequate to the expences fultaincd by Napoleon during the Spanilh war."
