SHANDY. To the Editors of the Western Sun, Gentlemen, I NOW claim a small place in your next number, in order to fulfill my promises of giving a statement of all the reports, again if the commissioners, which have come to my knowledge. I will begin by mentioning that it has been a common subject of glamour, that the gentleman who fingerprinted the false were joined with companies, comforted of the first characters in our country for wealth and influence, and formed for the purpose speculation. This has been complained as a violation of their duty, in as much as it has been thought highly improbable that men can be fo strictly impartial where their own intereft is concerned. Another report to their prejudice is, that they have dealt largely in what has be ludicrous called hush money, either directly or indirectly through other persons. That by much means as above stated, many have been prevented from purchasing; less land has been fold in a given time; and at a less price; That the United States have fulfilled less at it re.

guards the revenue derivable from their lands

and the greater expense of time for which they have to pay the Territory as it regards population and improvement, and indivi. duals as it regards their disappointments. What, it has been afraid, can one poor man do when opposed by wealthy companies with the commissioners at their head? We have money enough to pay for our spots of land, agreeably to law but none for hush money. We wanted the land at full price as we thought reasonable, and as we could pay-we wished to settle upon and improve it without any thought of forfeit. ing it, as had been of frequently done by those companies. I will now take the subjects from which, as I believe, those gla mours have ar attendant circumflances of a tradl of land at the month of the Wabafh. 2d. The fame of a trail at the mouth cf Big Prgeon creek. 3$. The fme of a traft at the mouth of Rig Blue river, 4th. The cafe of ?.Ir. Hervey Heath, in his application to make an entry lince the fales. 5th. The cafe of Clarke and Jones, in buying their land on the Ohio. All thefe are cafes in which the commiflioners have been pointed at as not having ncVd ftridV ly proper, and which being infinitely diver: fifi-d, have been productive of fo much noife. I have enterrd into no detail reflectingthem, becaufe the doing fo would make my piece unpardonatly long, and 1 think I have fufficiently fulfilled my promife without it. Let the commilfioners explain them and all the circumftances attending them fatisfactorily, and they will be perfectly acquitted of all charges which could be brought fo far as I am informed. I am now done with the fuhjedt. Whether I Inve acted right or wrong, in doing as I have muft be fubmittetl to eh impartial public for myfclf, I reft perfectly fatisfird in the confeious rcdVitude of my intentions. ry public officer, however urimpeachable, his form-r life and conduct, is a proper fubjeet of difcuflion, though not of " rancour." I cannot conclude without obferving to melfrs. Bdolet ainl Ewing, that though they have .profeffed to have no duGre to wreak their vengeance, on one, who, in tluir opinion is a real object of pity," and difclaim all intemperarjeeof language as " the writhings of a guilty confi ience," yet thry have betrayed in their publication mere of it than was neceiTary in the" vindication of injured innocence." SAML. M'KEE, Jr. Mevsrs. Stout &1 Smoot, THE author of a piece fubferibed an Elector, which appeared in your half flieet ofthe22d ultimo, having made a declara-

tion never to fend -another piece to you

piefs in conlVquence of your treatment to him, and fome friends, who r.s well as himfelf, believed they had a right to appear in

your paper of that morning. To prevent

any imprcuions unfavorable to him from being made on the minds of his felUv citizens, which might happen if no notice

were taken of the Crui tat ions of Veritas.

I appear premifing that for fome time pafl,

I entertain the funr opinions with him ref-

pecting the adminiftrator and adrniwiftration of our government ; and that in this

we are not alone, for many, and I fincerely believe every man in the territory who wi fli

es well to this country, are unfriendly to

the existing order of things, except the clected who like Veritas and his friends in the adminiftration have hitherto hoodti? incited many of the e lectors. The motives of An Elector were to

draw off the veil which thofe in, and thofe

who call themfelve friends to the adminif

tration, and of the people, have fpread be

fore the eyes of the citizens to txpofe the

conduct of thofe men as ofheers, and to res

tore to the people if possib'ey that peace

and unauimity, which they have been be reaved of, by the organization and admin

iftratiou of the fecond grade of our govern

ment. Whoever afcribes any other to him. is deceived, or wiflies to deceive others.

His real name is known to Veritas if not

the printer will give it to him, or to any o

ther man. He is to the British what he

is so all ctbet nctins, in peace a friend in w ar an enemy ; and to the United States not lefs attached than Veritas, althouh he may not derive fo much support from them. Does Veritas contend that a perfon born

out of the U. S. cannot conceive correct

ideas, or thttnone but natives have a right to exprefs them, in cxpofing the public conduct of men, in whofe bands is placed

the machine of government. .The Elector

and thofe who think with him, take the

liberty of differing as well in principles aGrrrnvilIc in a in conduct fron Veritas, ands adherents, herd, and will contLje to thitU Vnd act while 5.1 a
