AFFECTING STORY. T 1 A t ry i r
jonn nurew oorcuer, a resec
table and wealthy inhabitant of the Ifle of Jerfey, had for feveral years paid his addreffes to a beautifu 1 &
accomplifbed young woman, a native of the Ifle of Guernfey ; and having furmounted the ufual dif
ficulties and delays of love, the happy day for leading his midrefs
to the altar, at length was fixed.
After giving thev neceflary orders
tior the reception of his intended
wife, Gordier at the time appoin
ted, in full health and high fpints,

miles from the port. The fervant

find his matter had not arrived;
ft repeated menengcrs were lent to
fearch and enquire in vain.
-v Having waited in anxious ex.
peciauon, mi midnight, theapprehenfionsof the lady and her family were proportionate to the urgency of their feelings, and the circumltances of the cafe. The next morning at break of day, the appearance of a relation of the miffing man, was not calculated to diminifh their fears ; and with evident marks of diftrefs, fatigue & dejection, he came to inform them that he had naffed the whole? f

both families for a good young man, thus cut of in the bloom of life by a cruel ailalfin, was increafed by the inifery and mode of his death. The grief of the young la
dy not being of that fpecics which

w as for that very reafoa the more
goignant. Her virtues and her beauty having attracted univerfal, the family

on to permit Mr. Gillaird, a mer
chant and a native of the Ifland, to become her fuitor, hoping that a fecond lover, might gradually with
draw her attention from brooding
over the catallrophe of her fird.
In fubmiffion to the wifhes of
her parents, but with repeated and
energetic declarations that Ihe never wrould marry, Gilliard was ad-
mittcd, but the unhappy lady
found it difficult to supprefs a cer
tain involuntary antipathy, which
(he always felt whenever he ap proached. But fuch was the ar
dor of paffion, or fuch the facina-
ting power of her charms, repulfe
only incrcafed defire, and Gilliard
perfifled in his1 umvelcome vilits,
fometimes endeavoring to prevail
on the unfortunate youg woman to
accept a prefent from his hands.
Mer triend remarked that ne was
particularly urgent to prefent her
with a beautiful trinket ot expenfive workmanfhip and valuable
materials, which Ihe pofitively & firmly refufed ; adding with a correctnefs offentiment, and propriety of conduct, not always imitated by her fex, that it was diflionorable and mean, to encourage
attention, and receive fayors from a man, who excited iin her mind
fenfations far more violent than in
difference, and whofe offers no
motives could ever prevail on her to accept. But Gilliard by his earneflnefs, and affiduities, and by exciting pi
ty, had won over the mother of
the young lady to fecond his wifh
es. In her defire to forward this
fuit, fhe had u&en an opportunity during the night, to affix the
trinket in queflion to herdaughters watch chain, and forbade her to
remove this token of unaccepted affection. The health of the lovely mourner fuffcred in theconflidt;
and the mother of the murdered man, who had ever regarded her
intended daughter-in-law with tendcrnefs and affection, croffed
thefea which divides Jerfey and
Guernfey to vifit her to offer every confolation in her power, and what in fuch cafes is always the

in his way from the port to the houfe, had been way-laid by Gil
liard, murdered and plundered of
the trinket ; in hope that after his death, he might fucceed to the poffeffion of a jewel far more precious. Gilliard, on being charged with
the crime boldly denied it, but while the injured family were fending for the officers of juflice, he
confirmed all their fufpicions by
filicide, and an impious letter left
in his apartment, in which he im
