From the New-York American. The packet ship Don Quixotte, fjom T/avre, brioga us Paris papers to the "*}4th ult. and London dates of the 13th, I which with the arrival of the JVianchester of the 1st of July, and Win. Byrnes
x\ pi'
the 8th, from 3'iverpool, give us late and- connected intelligence from Euft* rope. The most important piece of ticws is that connected with the revolt of the Janissaries in Constantinople, owing to the attempt of the Sultan to subject them to European discipline.
They were overpowered in thp capital) but as they are spread all over the empire and have a common cause, it may oetheped, (we say "hoped" in the interest of the Greeks,) that intestine war will divert the force which .(otherwise wouldbe exerted against the rebels of the Morca and the Isles. Selim 111. uncle of the present 8ultanf perished in a similar insurrection in 1S07 His nephew has yet to see the issue of his attempt. It is said lie evinced great personal courage in the attack upon the JanUsaires, and a most unrelenting temper. The French papers concur in supposing that this insurrection may render the Divan more accessble to the representations of those Europeon powers that are interceding to stop the effusion of the blood of the Greeks.
The elections in England have been contested with extraordinary spirit, and expense. The 't imes in discussing some items of receipt in the revenue, ascribes to the circumstance of the elections an increase of sJ00,€0QJ in the excise on spirits, pqsfc hors«9, &c.—Mr. J5 rough am has lost his election for Westmoreland. Mr. Beaumont, who Was a candidate for Northumberland, had fought a duel with Mr. Latnbton, a relatiou ot'Loid Harwick, who was a rival candidate, tor some expressions used no,the hustings. They fought in therein at 12 paces, and exchanged only one ineffectual shot, the police being all the time in hot pursuit.
