of the Virginia Whig Convention, transmitting a copy of the preamble and resolutions adopted by that body:' Bcffai.o, N. Y,, August C, I860.
I have the holier to acknowledge the receipt ofyour letter of the 23d nil., transmitting a copy of the preamble and resolutions adopted by the Whig Convention of Virginia, lately assembled at Richmond, by which that intelligent and patriotic body reccomtnended to their whig breth- - tcd throughout the State to yeild to my nomination for the Presidency their active and zealous support. ; Standing, as I do, as the known canbijdalo of another party, I yet receive this | recommendation with gratitude and pride. I feci that ft is made, not because the principles of the two dartics are identical, nor with a view of merging them in each other —for such an object is expressly disclaimed by the convention —hut because the principles which my nomination represents nppaoach more nearly to those maintains! by the whig* of Virginia than those of any other candidates, and because, as the convention was pleased to say, of their confidence in my late administration of the government. Whatever may ho omr differences on minor subject*. I am sure there ia one ou which wo agree—and that one at this moment is paramount to all others. I allude to the .preservation of the union of these States ant] the rescuing of (he country from sectional; strife. The qupstion is not so ron£li how shall the government, he administered, ap how shall it be preserved, and on .this great, vital, question, national whigs, national democrats and Union loving Americana may well net in concert. : On’ this basis I shall with great pleasure recurve the votes of all who have confidence in my integrity and ability, and who ask other pledge than my past service .for thy fnturo conduct. This positionisecras'to menlike honerahle to nil Xo principle js sacrificed. No deception is practiced; nhilT trust that no one casting Ins vote ton mn bo this ground will rver havu ennia to regret it. ‘ Millard fillmore.
