The Indian a prairies are generally fin alt compared with those of llliuoisaml Iowa, but they nre oil the better for this, inasmuch aa timber fur fencing and building is always convenient. . Those along the Wabash, iu Tippecanoe, Fountoip, Vermillion, Vigo, and Sullivan, are seldom mot's than five or six miles either in length ur biend th. Those to the Northeast counties —Steuben, Lagrange, Noble, Kosciusko, Fulton, Marshal), and Starke, are generally only of a few hundred acres each iu extent, with beautiful J , groVes every where interspersed. Those of Elkhart, St. Joseph,' Laporlo and Porter, are larger, sometimes covering, a township v or more, and are extremely fertile, and sufpahaiugly beautiful. In White, Jasper, Warren and Benton, wo reach the open, treeless, illimitable plain, stretching away in grandeur,: and sublimity, towards ihe setting sun. ' ‘ ‘

In somo uf the, counties, particularly, Pulaski, Starke, White, Jasper, Porter ami Lapqrle, many of the prairiesfare wet, so ' much so, as to be considered marhbes. Some ’ of them may bo fotmd difficult to drain,' arid must remain marshy, but by far the greater pnyt of them may be most perfectly drained, when they will torm.tbemost fertile soil in tbe world. The most difficult .of drainage arc thoso about tbe head waters of tbe Morion, extending from the Now Albany and Salem Railroad, where if crosses tbe Monon waters at Mcdatyville. to Wianimac, on the Tippecanoe. There arc also some on the waters of the Iroquois, m Jasper, having I but Might fall, Thera may be some matshy lands, incapable of drainage, on the waters of the Mankakec, .above English, lake, and some on the North hank of tho river near tbe Illinois line. But all along the Kankakee,.from the foot of English lako'to the .Illinois line, particularly-on the South side of the river, there is a fall of something over.tea feet to the mile, sufficient to carry off all tho water, whenever the State ditches are made.
