There was a member of the old’ line party, 1 as I have'. been inlorined, and I think correctly, who, bat a short time since, said at Florence that he intended to put such a report in circulation against me. He was then told tho report was false. He did not then pretend he had ever heard mo say any such thing; nor has he, knowledge or infomiation, ever pretended at any time that ho heard mo uso any.suchTanguago; yet he made the threat that ho would have the report published. I am not afraid that those who know me best", and those who know that same old liner, will fur one, moment give credit to tho statement; but among strangers, who do not know either of-us, such a statement does mo much injury. I am no abolitionist; 1 never was an abolitionist; and no man'who has any regard for truth will make or give currency to such a charge. 1 was born and reared in Switzerland county, and havo never had a home elsewhere; aud I am willing to be tried by the conduct of tny whole life, public and private; and if 1 am not considered deserving tho confidence of my fellow-citizens, let me fail. But I hope tho citizens of Switzerland county, of any and all parties, will not hurriedly decide against mo upon such unreasonable reports os that published in tho News and herein referred to. Let mo bo tried by my honesty and qualifications, I despise the poor heartless wretch who started tho report to my prejudice, and will take no other or further notice of him, but Icavo him to tho reflections of his own corrupt heart.
