We see this fact strikingly illustrated in the extraordinary Know Nothing movement in every quarter of the Union; hut its effects in California,'in the resuscitation of ea\i* npnt politicians supposed to bo defunct, moat remarkable. Look at the list .of these great gun 9 a late' grand mass meeting pf the American party at Sacramento City. Gen- Foote was there, a. veritable Know Nothing, late^ democratic Senator from, and still later deinocratic Union'Governor of Mississippi. Hon. E. 0. Marshall W* 9 there, late'democratic radical .member of*Congress; audHoii, Bailie Peyton, late whig ambassador to Chili; and ;a hoist of others great.and spaU, heretofore known as whigs and demhcrate, Such coalitions signify the working of a great revolution of some sort, and they indicate, too, the drift of the popular current, . Gen., Cass and Geiii Foote worktid together, shoulder to shoulder, for the *cbmp romiso ro ensures of 1850. Perhaps they may ho -found again side by ; side in soma great Union, movement in 1890, which will place the pew American organization on the ground lately occupied by-lhe democratic . party. The remains of the old parties, and the materials of the new are still in a state of efferveseoce, and it wjfl require yet six or eight months of active engineering to briug’tbem into shape.. Meantime, ifcis highly gratifying to see, from day to day, whole cpmpnnica of old party campaigners, supposed to bo laid' upon ihe shelf,'enrolled for active service for another, campaign, in a new partyi upon a new platform, and in foil view of the public plunder of seventy-five mil* lions a year. We must have a change, j-Xeto-York Herald.

"We' have searched dil igently in all directions to ? be able to give an indication of future prices.- 'From the most reliable data within bar reach, wo judge that wheat for future delivery will range slightly above 81 a bushel; we sli&U expnet to see the flour market settle in the vicinity.of - 86 a barrel. We are apt to overlook the fact that the com crop*govcms the price of wheats /; This yesr many thousands of acres of promising corn wore destroyed by rains, and floods, so that notwithstan-1 ding the greater breadth planted, we shall not have over an ordinary crop. Oats and'potatoes will come in to help out the wheat and corn, so the effect will be that of an ordinary season all around. Plenty' of hayr.and fodder will back up the coarse grains; so that farmers will do as' the/, please about parting with their live stock, which 'w^lt-still keep up the price of beef. These staples will control the-pri-ces of all minor articles, and so, as we look upon it, both buyer arid seller will be ,upon, about an equal footing, and that is as it should be. . ' 1

HEUED7 FOB THB SUMMER CoiIPjJlKT. —The great increase of deaths among children has become cause for serious apprehension, and any remedy to avert the fatality should be tried. We have been told of a remedy for eholcra infantum, which is said to be excellent, and its pliqity will warrant a trial. Here it is:--Tak? onepound of flour and wrap it tight* ly in a cloth, after which boil it for three hours; let it get perfectly cool before the removal of the cloth; then remove all the glutinous substance from the outside, which will leave the interior portion hard like chalk. This 'should be'grated to serve as thickening for milk, (from one cow, if possible to obtain it,) upon which to feed the patient. It will keep, fora long time, and it is said by those who have used.it, to be more beneficial than anything else!. \

GO* Hev Abel Smith, editor of the National Magazine, thus points out the course that should be ipursued by the editors of newspapers:• We do not in our editorials, hold ourselves responsible to the personal views of any individual patron. For ourselves, personally, we would not subscribe asix-j pence to a periodical which should bold itself bound to re-edit only received views, or to bring ua from mouth to mouth such opinions only as are admitted by common consent,* or area repetition, a rehash of oar own individual thinking. We pre-fer-something independent—even if it challenge, sometimes, our dissent. This is one of gibe prime rules of good editing, and he that don’t like'it, bad better clear oar track as soon as possible.

Put nr Wheat Early. —Farmers! now is the time to prepare land for wheat.— Don’t forget the lessons of the past two years. Remember that early sown wheat generally escapes the rust and the midge worm, (weevil.) We know some farmers who intend to sow all '‘ their, wheat before the last of this month, August See to it also that the land is deeply plowed, and well drained, then the crop will be ready to withstand either a dry or a wet season.
