Candidates for Hie 1’rpsldcuc^ The in an of th q• future is yet a veiled figure, whose corning greatness js unknown to the world and to himself. Anpiranls are seldom successfnl. So in other cases. Calhoun, Clay, Cass, aiid Webster, the slaves of the last, infirmity of noble minds and ambition, were not wisoenough to hold the pride of power as a bauble; and three of them have already descended to tho grave without the gratification of their mijst ardent-wishes. ■ It has. been said that every .member of the United States Senate hoi, hopes fur Presidency. The BUI Bug, or Corn Borer.

Wo made tho following extract from a paper treating of the bill bog or com borer, \ prepared bp Mr. Townseud Glover for the Agricultural report now in press: , !‘Tho insect bill bog or copi borer; (Bpcnqphorns) is’fronpfpurto six-tenths of'anVmch iti length, ppd qfa reddish* brown or.naMish black color. (Jho jjbad is tnrnisbpd trunk or bill hence its "common name. It is. very destructive to corn mmany parts of the Bouth'and Sbntn-wcsL and was. brought foroxamination by Senator Evans, where. He states it 'is very injurious tp the cfpps on t|jo Ppdpe river. 1 He says: . • “The perfect ipsect* eats into the stalk pf $ho corn either below or just at the surface of the ground, where it deposits its egg. After changing into, a grub, the in-sect-remains in tho stalk devouring tho substance until it |ransfonps into the pupa stale, which occurs in tip* sajno cavity in the staljjc occupied by the grab. It mokes its appearance ip tho following spring in the perfect state again to deposit its eggs at the foot of the young corn plants,— These insects destroy the main stem of shoots, thus, causing suckers to spring up, which usually produce nograin, or if any, ofVery inferior quality to that of the gen-, eral yield. ‘ Swamp. lands or low grounds ore the places most generally attacked.” ’ General Fitzpatrick, of Alabama, and Colonel Piteblynn, chief of the Clioctaw nation, both corroborate tho statement, in saying they are: very destructive in Alabama, and on tlio Hod river, in Arkansas, but that the planters have greatly diminished their numbers by pnllingup the roots of the com after tho crop has-been housed piling up in heaps and burning the whole mass. Perhaps quick lime applied Tn layers to the corn stalks and roots would, destroy them as tho heaps heat and decompose, which would ’ bo particularly useful whore Hmo is required for the soil ns a manure. By these means the unmatched pupa in tho corn would he consumed. A very perceptible decrease of the bill bug has been observed where the practice of burning the- roots has been followed, and if persevered in, might neatly eradicate them! in the course of a few ycara.y ' ■ •
