The sycamdre, or button ball, is’ a tree so (easily transplanted that it is a wonder tbqt it i{s not more frequently found by the road-side, jerto give the cattle shelter, in the pasture, from the hot sun.. It is very apt to propagate iitself, when once started, and on that account ! it is sometimes objected to by farmers. But [they seem to forget that the seeds generally fall, or at any rale are mo it apt to grow by the ‘side of streams,,5n the very edge of the water, or in sandy beach, whsie nothing else will ■ grow, and that their growth protects the bank, ; amt affords a greater amount of fuel in a short • time than nay other three; aud its growth I costs nothing—absolutely nothing. Beds of sand, washed by the Roods of alt soil, have become dense groves of these trees. Some of these trees are of great size,'and some of'the latest have gone to the saw mill and been cut into lumber almost as valuable as cherry. All of these trees oririnaled from three little xrouts niantcJ leas than one hundred years ego. ' A mixed Food flfeccssur j*. [ if I only bend my atm or move tny . finger, i there is a certain portion of the tissues de- ! si toyed which must be supplied by my food; I the mote work that a non performs, the more 1 of those nitrogenous substances he requires. >So Turns supplying the waste of the'tissues, it is a matter of indifference whether we give an animal food containing gluttcn or albumen; but it exercises a considerable influence on tie character of the animal. Take for example a hunt, at which we have an omnivorous animat—a horse, accompanied by a catnivernuj animal—a dog, following a hetbiverous animat—a lore. Even the character of nations is very materially affected indeed by their food. The other class of food serves a very important, but totally different purposes, namely, that of supplying animal heat. The ! temperature uf our bodies is, in temperate climates, at least, higher than tbe surrounding air. Now, In order to keep up this temperature, a combustion goes on similar to that of on ordinary fire. Tbe same products—carbonic acid—water and ammonia—ore evolved from the mouth of the furnace of the body and the mouth of a common chimney. In cold, weather, a certain portion of heat is gradually abstracted from our body, which must be supplied by the combuVlion of our food or of the matter of our bodies; the colder the climate, therefore, the mere heat-giving materials must be supplied in the food.— Prof. Lyon Playfair.
