Conv-ijviiftlcrco «>f Cm Itcv elite. LETTEIt. mOJI WASHIXCTOX.. Wahiu-vgtox, Jah. 17, 1855. . Messrs. Editors: — Congress seems rc- . solvwl to go to work m earnest; the hour of meeting has; Won changed to 11 o'clock,'instead of 12, and they . hate commenced holding night sessions—a circumstance rather riniiKtiril so long before the day of final adjournment. On Monday last three bilks were introduced, making appropriations lor improving the Ohio and Mississippi Hirers, and after being read twice were referred lo fhe*appropriate committee. . Should Congress pass bills of this kind, them is no doubt but that the President wonld sign them, without hesitaaw. During tlic same day, after the House had gone into Committee of the Whole; air. Stephens, of,Georgia, addressed the Committee, in reply to Mr. ( ■ampl’cll, of Ohio, with a view to vindicate his legislative'character from the charge of inconsistency,; raadp by Mr. Campbell, on the occasion of that gentleman’s late reply to Mr. Stephens; - I did hot hear him on this occasion, nor havc l seen the speech in print, but hear that his reply v/as all that his most ardent admirers criuld have wished. At the evening Railroad bil I was under consjdora tion; not exactly under consideration cither, for.when the House resolve itself Into Committee of! ■ m ■ ‘ '-V,; .]• . j the Whole, and take up a - subject, it is very seldom die members speak upon that pariicnlar.subject, but they take that occasion to speak upon what over subject they see proper, and it is regarded as legitimate, .So, upon this occasion, some gentle men’ occnpiedlhc attention, of the House upon the Cnban question, and one on the subject of the secret order, known j as the ‘‘Know Nothings,” taking grounds j in fivorof tlio Order, its objects ail'd its i aims, advocating the repeal of the natu- j ral nation laws, and the entire exclusion ■ of foreigners from the ballot-box.; This; gentleman was Mr. Smith, of Alabama;1 and one of his reasons-for the position! ho takes is,- that all foreigners.cast their J votes and influence against £ho institution of slareiT. Upon this subject of “Know Nothingism” t have real and beard so much that I am almost tired out with it, ■ but recently I read an address delivered' by Henry 'Wiml Bucher, at Hartford,! Connect ictii, in which he speaks of- the I “Know Notbings” in a way and mariner r that meets my entire; approbation;arid ij heartily; agree with tho* sentiments ad- j vauccil by him in that address, ; ;; At the! same; time: l am; proud to say that the ■ number, of. describotl by .Mr. Eccchcr, who; hail from, the Western States, are comparatively few, but it was no doubt- applicablc to the locality in which the - address ’was pronounced and circulated. h Allow me to subinit one short extract fiom Uio address above alluded to.
