NUMBER 111.
There are - men, who call themselves respectable Christiana—worthy citizens—who ait in comfortable pews, and Irom gilded prayer book# offer up with a seemingly touching earnestness, the petition: ••From all evil and. mischief; from sin; from the crafts apt) assaults of the devil; from Thy wrath, and from everlasting damnation, Good Lord dtlim hi/" who defend the practive of mnj selling? Yes! who practice it themselves, aqd who act as if they supposed they should go to fleaven one of these dqys jq Utmr Sunday cloihes, and peihaps a page to open the door; for doing their whole duty, iq aiding in the salvation of men,'by going to church an Sunday and going through the morning prayer.
Let no man suppose because wp quote from a church formula, that ve attack any sect or creed. the ministers of our churches, as well as tfiefr respeptivp Hocks, are generally found upon the right side. But wo shall attack the supporters of the rum interest wherever found, even if wo go from the pew to the pulpit, .and say to the reverend wolf in sheep’s clothing, as Nathan did, “TYjou.art the man.*" A preacher who expounds the Gospel, and at the same lime defends the rpm in* (crest, should 'have inscribed over his church, door, Patent.Piety for dry P(o * p/c, sold here!” N. B. Purphaaers are nut expected to do*anything but talk re* Itgion and drink wine—these being the chief, end of man!” Now we rather think when people begin to go to Heaven in tint way—the Narrow Ruud will have (n be considerably widened. Nor these alone—the whole body of die lukewarq (>|i this subject in the Christian Chuich should be arpused, arraigned, and tried on this point. No man has a right to put up the daily prayer— *• Deliver us from tempiation"—if lip believes that one of the chief comipandmpms, comprising alt that the law apd prophets taught, is "to love his neighbor as himself'—lf he stands afar off at such a time as this, and will not raise a finger tp aid jn removing from our midst the terrible temptation which is daily sending hundreds to temporal and spiritual damnation. But it is out only iho physical qian that, suffers—not alone hjs miserably healed frame, that inflamed and corrupt, swells in the vain efforts to escape the damning bend that riots In all his veins—not this alone, though this is appalling—the intellect is stopified, and all the due sensibilities which well*up in a geneicns mind, are dried up, and deadened; and the whole moral man is shrunken and withered; as if the blast of an infernal Sirocco had swept over and through birr. This is true! Von all have men it. and seen it, too, in the cases of men who have passed their daily lives under your very eye?. Csll them up before povy, and see whether all the greatness, gentleness and manliness of their character have not, at the touch of this demon, disappeared, and in their stead all the passions and weaknesses of poor fallen humanity arisen, and will) a giant's clutch taken possession of body and soul. The destruction is utter and eternal, unless the strong arm of God arrests his steps. Now, pan spy ipso bp devoted to a more important causa• than that which is designed to stay the march ul this fell.tleslroyer-apd |o pbajtj hipi up at once and forever? One o*l the objections raised against the movement of the advocates of a Prohibitory Law. is, that they are bringing the question into polities. Of course they are! 1 should like to know where else they should bring it, to make their efforts of any effect. It would suit its opponents, jio doubt, to have jt left to Debating Societies and Pulpit preaching alone. But to make a practical, efficient movement to have the law passed, which they are laboring fur, is certainly a must unheard of atrocity- What simpletons these temperance men are, not to know, that the very ‘accomplia h their ends, is to pul their hands in their pockets cm election day/apd.pct to taka fheg oulj ind while
the whole force of the jrum jpiefMf j> jo* ja*d tng.the-poIJs ,•ip sluifiorooi snd win'slid -yankM liant/aouUilirriijgtOnd element vote* producing ajr! Why, my ■ friend#, it Is because they they fee lhat.tfe are. now ip earpeau tfifl they are alarmed, and cry, '—‘■Treason lo Parly, 1 ’ and use'all it)e hng-a*boo tfick# which frighten children in the nursery, or control (he rum-drinker in election times.
Yes, we are, with temperance, baffling stt the calculations of partisan leaders. It is the young David that i» to slay the Goliah of the rum interest, and utterly to discomfit every parly nomination hereafter made in rum shops, by rum drinkers, who do the drudgery of rum manufacturers; and bring their families to beggary and shame, and go themselves to ruin—despised, forgotten, damned.
Thai is their end, my friends, as certain as that God lives. The political grog shop has opened the graves of hundreds, in this county, within the last ten years. There is opt a man in this room—l make the assertion boldly—who cannot call to mind now, the ftco of some friend, who has not gone within the last three months, down this dismal and awful road-to ruin*
And yet, men will dnw a long breath after standing by the cofiin of thp departed, and say: “Btit you Temperance men go (uo far!” -‘Your proposed law is illegal!” '-Yon will never gel it enforced if you pass UP This lasi objection has force in jt, in view of the dodging going on among officials in relation to rum-sell-ing, But help us, my friends, lo do something! Let us try the Maine Law. and if we cannot enforce it, and the majority ask its repeal, we will go with you for “a stringent license law.' 1 Help us! —that is onr cry in the ears of this vast audience, and on each individual man in it; we urge our case. If we save but one dear friend of yours from that awfpl fate—a drunkard's death—>*fiu will bless us while you live, for trying, at least, to exterminate the accursed and damning thing. In conclusion, 1 call upon the young men here to-night, tq lake this question for self examination home with them, am! tq think pf it often: ‘-Can 1 do anything io aid this mpyetjiput by word and action, by preaching apd practice, in view of the friends who arc now treading the dangerous path of moderate the songs of merriment over sparkling wine, and jesting apt! laughing at the feats of Good Fellows—lhe preparatory banquets to certain ruin and Eternal Death!” Think it over—decide—act!— And may Qoi) cpunsel and lead you to wisdom.
Curiosities of Sleep.
In Turkey, if a person happens to fall asleep in the neighborhood of a poppyfield, and the wind blows over towards him. he becomes gradually narcotised, and would dip, if the country people, who are well acquainted with tlio circumstances, did not bring 1 him to the next well or stream, and empty pitcher after pitcheron his face and body. Dr, Oppenhejm. during his residence in Turkey, owed his life to this simple and efficacious 1 irealment. Rr. from whom this anecdote is quo(pd, also reports the case of a gentleman, thirty years of age, who, frotp long continued sleepiness, was reduced to a complete living skeleton, unable to stand on his legs. It was partly owing to disease, but chiefly to the abuse of | mercury and opium, until at last unable to pursue his business, he sank into abject poverty and woe. Dr. Reid mentions a friend of his who, whenever any thing occurred to distress him* soon become drowsy and fell asleep, A fellow student also at Edinburg, upon hearing suddenly thp unexpected death of a near relative, went to his bed, and almost instantaneouly, amid the glare of nuon-day, sunk into a profound slumber. Another person, reading aloud to one of his dearest friends stretched on his death bead fell fast asleep, and w(i|i t{*p bopk sljll in hit) hand, went on reading utterly qnconeioua of what he was uttering. A woman at Haiuault slept seventeen nr eighteen hours a day for flften years,
Another is recorded lo have slept once for four days. Dr. Macnish mentions a woman tyhqspeqt three fourths of her life in sleep, and Dr. Elliotsun quotes the esse of a young lady who slept for six weeks, and recovered. The venerable St. Augustine, of Hippo, prudently divided his hopr# into three pans; eigt to be devoted to sleep, eight recreation and eight to convene with the world.
Maniacs are reported, particularly in the Eastern hemisphere, to become furiously vigilant during the full of the moon, more especially when the deteriorating ray* of in polarised light (» permitted to fall into their apartment; hence the name lunatics. I here certainly is a greater ptonepese to disease during sleep than in the waiting state; fur those who pass the night in ( ihe (Jampagna di Roma, inevitably become infected with its noxious air. while travelers who go’through without *i"pping, escape the miasma. Intense cold induces sleep, and those who perish In Iho snow, sleep on till they sleep the sleep of death, ■
