We are well i snare of the recent, researches of Prof, j Way, and oilier?, showing the retentive | power of soils in preventing Jhe loss of maim re s applied to land in a state o[ solution; we are not, however, satisfied that ; expectations in that mLiter are to he fully realized by farmers. .Mr. Mechi says that his liquid manure, offer poising thro’ several feel of soil, still contains both organic and inorganic matter; and we know dial in all cttotl land, rain water that comes out in springs and wells is nm pure, but abounds in both ‘vegetable and mineral salts dissolved out of the ground. Tillage increases tha solubility and solution ol these substances which ate die turn! of-plants; and. hence tillage at the line ef planting and afterwards augments the feeding and growth of props. Having decided to plow a field in the fall, we should not hesitate to break up the sub-oil a little deeper than it ever before was exposed to tho light, heal, frost and atmospheric gases above ground. These are powerful chemical agencies, and admirably adapted to deepen and improve a sod. If one can turn under a good coal of grass, weedi, mould, or manure, so much the better fur the land, Break the ground fine—that is, cut narrow furrows, as well as deep one?, that die tillage may bo perfect.
