GOOD SOCIAL WORK IS DONE
i LftPORTE MISS DELLE OGLESBEE TELLS OF SPECIALLY BENEFICAL INSTITUTION IN THAT CITY. TOLD SATURDAY CLUD Int:rssting Story of How a Number of Women Help Their Sisters of All Classes. At the la-:t meeting of tlie Saturday Club, Mrs. Ogden read a very ifiterestir.g paper on the poet Edgar Allen Poe. Following this Mesdames Stevens and Metsker pave an informal rejxrt of the State Convention of Women's Clubs held in Indianapolis last week. ' Mbs Oglesbee, of Laporte then told the story of her Social Settler nient work in her home city. It was most inspiring and unique being one of the few settlements outside of the large cities. Miss Oglesbee believes that there is no ''community so small that it does not need some such work. The work, in Laporte was started by Edith Morrisey, who had lived for a time at the. Chicago Commons. Miss Morrisey tried first to get the k&e of the sehool house as a social center, but the school board were not ready for that yet. She offered to employ a social secretary r.t her own expense. Next the Y. M. C. A. was considered but as many of the women who would lead in such a work were not orthodox, that is they vere open OHly to the orthodox, this
was not adopted. A Woman's Asso- wives -who hav been factory crirl frfem was formed and the oldooen and had never learned house Wrty jail, which had been idle for some j;-7.--Th otb -r ladies eave talks and time wa obtained for a six month's ' demonstrations . to classes of V trial nf settlement work. Five cents truest fee is paid by outsiders for a half day's use of the hous'e and some of its rooms are rented for parties to clubs. The association house contains rest ruon s. toilet conveniences, a nurserv where mothers mav leave their children for five cents while they shop, an excellent cafetaria wiere inexpensive and wholesome lunebes mav be obtained, parlors where working girls and others may entertain their friends. Many people thought it would be impossible to unite the girls and women of leisure and the working "iris. Miss Oglesbee said only once has she heard any words of snobbish ness. Except for this once all has 1 -wn beantifullv harmonious. All classes have mingled together in classes, club and part ?es. There are now 350 working girl members. There are clas?s in sewinsr, bolh embroidery and nracticil dress rraV in?, china painting, stenciling, cook-i'l-r. American Literature, a glee club, and gymnasium clashes. In these are school teachers, factory iris, girls of liesure and housekeepers. One interesting club is the club of pirls who do housework. These fill the house on Thursday afternoon and evening as this is their time off. Saturday' afternoon there Is a club of girls under fourteen years of age. mostly srirls broueht in from running the streets. Here is a chance for some of the . older girls to do "bis sifr" work. In the basement is a room with a music box. and a piano and plenty of room for the girls to plav all kind of. games or to dance. The house has a Library snd readin? room, a nice light sewing room, a small-children's play ' room, and three bed-rooms, which are for the use of any woman who Is not able or is too timid to go to a hotel. She may stay here for 25 cents a night. So far it has not been necessary- to "s- the jail proper. Only the Sher ifjts resiaence has been used. The Association finds that it ean cr-perate niclv with other organizations. Meeting as, it does with the pool peop'e it can help the work of the Charity Circle, also . in probation work. . . Sunday the house is full of girls. Here they may entertain their beaux in pleasant quarters and with a canerone. If this should happen, there would be much more need for the bank than even now. A Household Medicine rhat stops coughs quickly and cures olds is Foley's Ihnev and Tar Com Txniml. Fred Wenzler. Plymouth-Culver Basket Ball. The P. H. S. five was defeated at "VI vor Friday niirht by the Culver "casket ball team 5.' to 10. While the Plymouth team showed 'ack of practice and experience, local conditions were largely, responsible for the one sided score. The hall at Culver is short and narrow, with low ceilinjis and the Plymouth team were greatly handicaped as they are used to the out-door 1nskets at the school. In justice to the Cnlver team it must be said they played a fast aggressive game and deserved the victory. The team which represented P. H. S. was composed of Richter and Overmyer forwards. Schroeder center, Jacox and Shirar guards, Nolan was substituted for Jacox in the second half. A return game will be played next Saturday here. The Plymouth team ni-e out for revenge, and expect a victorv on their own grounds. A Mail Carrier's Load seoms heavier when he has a weak baek and kitlney trouble. SPECTACULAR CHARACTER. : There died yesterday on his private vaeht near Charleston, South
j Carolina, one of the most interest- ; an I spectacular characters in this country in the person of Joseph blitze r owner cf the New York World newspaper and printing establishment, the greatest establishment of its kind in the world, not fveeHn'r. probably, the great print ing plant of the London Times. j r'nitv-f-cen years ago Joseph Pulitzer was an immigrant just landed in New York City. He was Penniless, friendless, and could not speak a word of the English tongue. His life since then reads like a romance with strange and fascinating features. For some time after he landed he did such odd jobs as he could find to do to sustain life, and finally in the later, part of 1864 enlisted in a view York Cavalry resiment and served as a soldier until peace was he was kicked into the street bv an insolent porter. Ie then and there resolved that he" would some day have revenge for that insult, and he diil. Twenty-two years after Joseph Pulitzer purchased the . ground on which t' e hotel stood, tore dn the building and erected thereon the ina?niuVe'it structure now the home of the freatest newspaper plant in the world. Some time after the war he drifted to St. Louis and into the printi"T business, finally obtaining thru frienls he had been able - to inke The St. Louis Post-Dispatch which he made a paying concern. In 18S: he purchasel the New York AVorhl from Jay Gould, paying for it SOO.OnO." Sinee then his success with the paper has been phenomeenal.lt is said that during the twentv-eigfit year of his ownership the gross receipts have been one hundred million dollars. In the later part of the ISSOs he lost his eyesight, since which tine be has been totally blind but has notwithstanding retained full control of his immense business interests. Medical Society Meeting. There were not so many physicians present at the meeting Thursday as was looked for, but the value of the papers and talks was not lessened anv bv that. Such meetings where specialists present the latest view of experts along given lines ot work, cannot fail to be of benefit to the physician in regular practice Certainly the doctors of this county are keeping abreast of the most advanced thinkers in all the important branches of medicine, and we convratulate them on the success of this .meeting. One of the speakers of the day remarked that it was a pleasure to anvver the question? asked by our home doctors, as the manner of asking them convinced him that the subjects had been f.tudietl beforehand. He said that in many places the manner ol askln? questions convinced him that thos. asking them, bad never read or studied the subjects, and lie wa.plcased to find our doctors up witv the times , A numb?r of the visitors who came in automobiles, did not sta for the banquet, as the weather was threatening, and they wished to get home before nisrht. A erood numberdid stay, and th barque was enjoved by all. The Preident. TV FJev savs that from a physician'? standpoint the meeting of Thursd was instructive, entertaining an every wiy' enjoyable.
