Dmmmond Donates Prize The South Bend News of Oct. 22, contains a write up of a meeting held by the Progress Club of that city on Saturday afternoon. The club heard the report of the flower shows that were held recently in the South Bend schools, three of which were conducted by the Philanthropic department of -the Progress Club. Tn connection with the prizes given in this contest, the name of Mrs. CP. Drummond is mentioned prominently as having donated one of the prizes Mr. Drummond h the daughter of M. A. O. Packard, pr.sident of the First National hank of this city, and until recent ears was a resident of Plymouth. When' Mrs. Drummond livd heiv' she w'a-i prominent in club circles, having hen a member of the Saturday club. She was alo.a member of. the Mozart club, hav ing held the olhce of president at its organization, continuing in that position until' her removal to South Bend. Her daughter, . Ladios Study Interesting Character of Henry Van Dyke, Noted Writer of Present Day. The program for the Saturday Chb was that they met with Mrs Jessie Brcoke on Oct. 2f, and in spite ; of rain a .fair number of the club ladies were there. The busi ness of Hie day was appointing delegates to attend the State Federa tion of Clubs at Indianapolis, and Mrs. Martlia SfevelisT" President, and Miss Alice Kuiger. Vice-President, were chosen, with Mrs. Florence Boys and Mrs. Xellie Metsker as alternates. The ladies Avill go to Indianapolis TuesTlay returning home en Friday. Mrs. "Pearl M. Snell, Treasurer of t ue club, resigned, and Mrs. Nellie Cressner was chosen to the position. The program was in charge of Mrs. Mary Bäker and Miss Mary Soutnworth. the subject being VanDvke. The ladies carried on the exercises in a-rather unique way reading concerning the subject, and then in a conversational manner discussing what was said of him. Henry -VanDvke was born Nov. 10, "1S52, in Pennsylvania, graduated at Princeton and studied in Berlin, Dr. VanDvke is an apostle of joyous religion, keen love of the best in literature, and a vigorous out-door life. He is especially fond of fishing, and a born "lover of nature. He has been since 1900 the Professor of English Literature at Princeton University." He is the author of a number of . religions books, besides writing many poemsof a high order. VanDvke. said. that "Patriotism is the animating spirit oil a nation and taking our. anthem "America" where it says "I love thy rocks and -rills.
