That is the question now for the school children of the "county, since auditor C. M. Walker has reported on hand $1477.48 of dog tax money taken this year, and which he has turned into the school fund. In addition to this amount the trustees of the townships have $1000 of the same kind of money. Each trustee keeps $100 of the dog tax money on hand for the use of the township. All of the dog tax money goes into the school fund so that while the dogs are chasing rabbits or killing sheep the boy and girl may be instructed in the school house. The law looks upon the dog as a nuisance :md taxes him whenever found, and as often as he changes owners even if it be a hundred times a year. CLUB PAPERS Of WRITERS ill CANALS
MRS. WORTHINGTON TELLS OF BRET HARTE, HELEN HUNT JACKSON AND OTHER CELEBRITIES OF THE WEST WONDERS OF CANALS Mrs. Kilmer Reads Interesting Paper on Waterways Europe and America More Valuable Than U. S. Has Thought. The Saturday Club met with Mrs. Armstrng. Quotations were from Bret Harte and Helen Hunt Jackson. Mrs. Wort hingt on read a very fine paper on "Wt stern Writers." The early writers of the far West were gold-seekers ranch-men cow punchers, and life was that of a new country. Prestige was disregarded and culture scorned, perhaps the most famous of these writers is Bret Harte whose tales of the ear'y California days are unequalled. His story "The Outcast of Poker Flat" is said to be perfect as a piece of literature. His quaint dialect of the fining camps has had many imitators Joaquin Miller, Geo. Wright, Owen Wister, Mary Halleck Toote, Gertrude Atherton are among the most noted and Helen Hunt Jackson whose fame rests on "Ramona" which deals with the wrongs of the Indfans. Mrs. Kilmer followed with an unusually interesting paper on "Canals. Canals' date frtm a period previous to the Christian era, the early Assyrians Egypians ind others, recognizing their usefulness and value. Locks to regulate the wnter-level in canals were invented in the 15th century.- While the eastern part of the of the U. S. has many miles of canals, the countries of Europe are far ahead. Most of them are honey-combed with canals bringing the sea-going vessels to the very doors of inland cities. The railroads have been the great enemy of canals in the U. S. in manv instances buying up canals and putting them out of business. This is now seen to have been a mistake and many old canals are being rehabililated and new ones projected. Railroads can not handle all of their freight business, and it is far cheaper to ship bulky commodities by water. The Erie Canal in New York state which was ridiculed while building as "Clinton's Big Ditch1' has proved such a profitable investment that the state is planning a new and larger canal to parallel the old one. Canals are chiefly built to shorten distance, or to over come natural obstructions in waterways already existing. The Panama Canal is the most gigantic canal roject in history. The Clnb will meet next- Saturday with Mrs. Winings. UNCLE HIRAM TO HIS NEPHEW
On Something Important for Him to Realize In His Relations With Men. "Stevey, my boy, said Uncle Hiram to his hopeful young nephew, "you may not be old enough yet fully to understand or at least fully to realize what I am about to say to you, but I'd better say it now for I might forget to say It later, and some day, and perhaps to your advantage, you will recall it, the thing I would now say to you being this: "Other people think of us what we think of them. "Do you get that through your nooddle? Other people think of us what we think of them, "This is highly important, because it applies to our inmost unuttered thoughts. If we think ill of a man he will think ill of us. So you want to think well of men. "Our thoughts of other people appear to form a sort of circuit returning from them to us. They go out from us to the fellow we are thinking of, who seems to relay them back to us. Whatever our feelings toward him may be, good or bad, he takes them in, reinforces them with strength from his own batteries and sends them back to us, with a feeling of friendliness if that was our instinctive feeling toward him, while if our feeling was one of antagonism that is the feeling that he relays back to us. "Don't think ill of men, Stephen; think well of them, as you may well do; there is more good in men than bad. Cultivate friendly relations and friendly feelings, and be sure that as you feel toward men so will they feel toward you." QUEENS BOROUGH TIN HORSES How Nightmares, Hobbles and Ponte of Beer Were Put on the City's Pay Roll. "What's all this Ulk I hear about tin horses in Queens borough r "I'm surprised at your ignorance. Tin horses are a mere term used to Obsignate equines which never existed, part of a graft game. "Explain some more, please." "Well, It was like this. If a fellow with a pull wanted some extra money he would have a couple of nightmares, report to the powers that be that he had a team, and they would be hired, at so much a day, for city work." "Did all of the grafters hare to have mares V "O, no; one of the gang had his wlfe'sjwo clothes horses, drawing full pay." "He was a genius." "Yes, another man had a hobby about not wanting to work, his son had a hobby horse, and so he doubled them up and sent In bills for a team, at least, so I hear. "That's Interesting." "Yes, rather. There was a rumor going around the other day that a man who owned a pair of ponies of beer also figured in the game." "I suppose If one of the gang's wife and daughters owned pony skin coats they could have got on the pay roll too." "Sure thing; It was a pony skin game, all the way through." "And all that these fake horses ever drew was pay?" "That's true, although they have set tongues wagging." Brooklyn Time. He told tae that this goose had been la his family for over forty years and was partial to beer stout, and even gin. One of the most remarkable records of the longevity of geeee with which I am acquainted is to be found in an old book entitled "Travels in Scotland," by the Rev. James Hall. M. LARGE CROWD ATTEND LEMERT HORSE SALE
EIGHTY-ONE HEAD OF FINE ANIMALS SOLD AT PRICES EIGHTY-ONE HEAD OF FINE ANIMALS SOLD AT PRICES RANGING FROM $147.50 TO $300 EACH. MANY DRUNKS IN CITY Saloons Show What They Can Do When They Have a Chance---Crowd was Large But not so Big as On Jan. 28. Lemert's horse sale Saturday was a big affair and brought a great crowd to the city not only from all over Marshall county but from all our neighboring counties. It was one of the big crowds the city has had, but so far as close observation can estimate was not as large by considerable as the great crowd that was here for the big sale of Jan. 28. That one was perhaps the very largest ever here for merely business. For bringing a crowd to town a Lemert horse sale beats forty saloons and several other things combined. Eighty-one horses were sold, and at prices ranging from $147.50 to $300. Messrs. Williams of this city and Rarick of Rochester, assisted by Steiner, were the auctioneers, and put the sale through in first class style. While the crowd was large, the fact of there being here was marred by the many drunks which our two saloons turned out on that day. Observers state that some forty or fifty drunks were seen on the streets, and as they gathered at the trains to go home the sight was something awful. Many had their pockets and grips full as well as themselves. It was noticed that at the sale several men bid who were too full to realize what they were doing and the auctioneers had some difficulty in getting away from these bids. It is too uncertain to sell to a drunk man because when he gets sober, he may say he did not want the horse---did not know he was bidding and the sale would not be good. This Will Interest Mothers.
