la'.iire xvi!i violate the oath it has taken to support the constitution, by attempting In divide Dearborn county? 1 trust not. The idea itself is so totally ridiculous, and the de
sign it is intended to cover so palpably mani
fest, that almost every reflecting man must re
pel it as an insult to his understanding, and
intended only to blind tiie ignorant, and g
the credulous.
I have spoken personally with the members of the legislature from many counties in the state, and all. without one single exception.
have agreed that to attempt to divida Dear-I horn county, would be an attempt to subvert one of the fundamental principles of the constitution. Ihit let nsrsupposc for a moment that there were no constitutional objections
to a division o the county, in what situation xvouM sire be for the ensuing five years, if it should be attempted? One -part of the county must again be arrayed against the other at
li ic enduing August election. Each party of
course xvih elect one or more men ol its own political piinriples; and tin; legislature, (ever
loth to meddle in sectional broils and county
quarrels.) seeing our own members diffeiing
on the subj( ct, xvill not go so far as to legislate
upon the subject at all; at d consequently the
labor ol oiir representatives would ne drawn from all other matters of interest totliecoun-
jix, to that of division, which can never be ef
fected. Rut admitting all ear representatives were in favor "J division, and (hat there were no
a ,ilv1' icoustituli'U'id objection to it, it would then
be at least three years before new county seats could be established, court houses, jails, and clerk's cilices built, and officers elected, du
ring all which time judicial proceedings must be frustrated, the people must be put to vast
expense, and our clerks, sheriffs, and all other
oliicers starve.
What course then, fellow citizens, is it our
duty to pursue? Regarding the I "2th section

a deadly enemy to that harmonv which should

hung, it was not because they did not deserve
it. To be hanged, in this part of the world,
is a very patticular lavor, and requires more
than ordinary merit to arrive at the honor. Philadelphia Sat. Xcn-s, July 9lh. The following case of interest to Southerners was brought before the court of Kin"s
bench at Montreal. A mrs. Marvin, cf
Charleston, S. On the part of inrs. Marvin, it was nlledged
that the girl was no slave but an apprentice, and tlint she was under liouds to t h nmnur

rents, liul the parlies who procured Hie writ on the other hand alledged that the girl might nevertheless have been the slave of those who had bound or hired her to mrs. it consists of a number of living tharacters playing upon a large space representing a
chess board, and several of the most inteiest-
ing games recorded by Walker and other celebrated players of the game. The per
formers are very handsomely attired in the Chinese and Persian costume. IJoxes arc lilted upon each side of the chess-board, where the persons sit who direct the moves, and the performers, who appear very perfect in their
dilterent characters, immediately upon the signal being given moved to the squares assigned to them. The public in general will
derive great amusement from this performance, and to the lovers cf this scientific game it must be a source of great delisht.
