On Monday night last the western stage came into Cooperstown without driver, passengers, or any thing else, save the mail and the baggage of three or four passengers, and fears were entertained that some sad accident had befallen them. It turned out, however, better than was anticipated. The driver stopped at Babcock's tavern to water his team, and the passengers went in; after watering the driver left his team to call them, and on his return found that his horses had concluded not to wait for him, but were pursuing their journey unmolested by any one they stopped at the door of the public house at Oaksville, and at the post office waited the usual time for changing the mail then came to this village, stopped at the stage

house a moment, went to the post office, and

were returning to the stage house, when foi

the first time it was observed there was no driver. Had it not been discovered they might perhaps unharnessed themselves.

A letter appeared in the New York Herald of Friday, "purporting to be written by

tome unknown person, who is made to cnless

that he. and not Robinson, was the murderer

of Ellon Jewett, the unfortunate courtezan.

The New York Sun pronounces the letter

a diabolical foreety, and affirms that its author

leceived a bribe of Sot) from the friends of Robinson, to create by this m-ans a public rumor of his innocence Surely this charge is altogether unfounded'. Extensive Bank Robbery. The vault of the Merchants' Rank at Providence was burglariously entered between Saturday night and Monday morning lat and robbed of bills on

the several banks of Rhode Island and else

where, and checks ofthe amount of .$13S,"20!,48, besides ."10,737,63 in pol l sovereigns. A reward of 10.000 is offered for the recovery

of all the money, and a proportionate sum for

any part tnereof. Io trace oTlhe bold burglars had at last advices been obtained. At the late session of the legislature, an act

was passed authorizing the Mayor Aldermen,' and citizens of Lancaster, to introduce in their city a sufficient supply of fresh and pure water, and by the late, paper of that place w e notice that the Mayor has advertised for proposals for a loan of 70,000, to carry into effect the object of said act. Melancholy Circumstance. A young female in Trafalgar got up during a fit of somnambulism, and taking a child about two years old, a relat ive of her own, she deliberately placed it behind some burning logs of wood in the fire place! The child was immediately rescued from the flames by it distracted parents, hut so dreadfully burned that it soon after died. It appears that the unfortunate girl was fast asleep, and when awoke labored under a stae of mental imbecility. The verdict of the coroners jury was in accordance with the foregoing facts. Lr. The Sketch Hook of Character; Or, Curious and Authentic Narratives and An ccdotes respecting Extraordinary Individuals. EN preparing the following work from ample materials, care has been exercised to avoidt in the main, the beaten track of former compilers; i present the reader what was inaccessible, tiiau to copy well known biographies and events. It will readily be admitted, that scarcely any but the professedly literary have ready access to original sources of knowledge, and what is more to the purpose, when cursory readers enjoy such ac

inclination to avail themselves of that advantage It moreover happens in the perusal of weighty productions, the mind retains more of general impressio s than of particular fret; and hence the great

These remarkable and deeply interesting tri

brace many recent cases furnished exclusive

ly by the London Anual Register, and recourse

has been had occasionally to manuscripts where printed documents could not be procuied.

It is believed that the collection supplies a

striking deficiency in the library ofthe lawyer,

physician, nnd general reader. Much care and attention has been exercised in the com

pilation, to make it not only acceptable but a necessary adjunct to the books already acces

sible, and the reader is confidently referred to

the case mentioned below for the evidence of the variety and value of the materials. To members ofthe bar the publisher nerd

hardly recommend it, as they must know its

worth, but to the general reader, who may he

misled as to its clmractor, the publisher assures them that it will be found, when comple

ted, a volume ol the most intense and exciting interest. One singular and alarming fact presents itself in the murder cases, and it is that so many should die protesting their innocence, li it to be believed, that upon the verge of eternity they could so loudly proclaim that which they know to be fake, when not a hope of escape is hell out to them? The "circumstan

tial evidence cases of which there are five, would make us think otherwise. It is a subject that may well make one ponder upon the law which demands life for life. The publication will commence in July next. It will be published in monthly Lumbers, containing I"20 pages each, printed on fine white paper of the size of the Marryatt novel, and will he completed in five months, or sooner, at the option of the publisher making a volume ol (500 closely printed octavo pages. The numbers will be sent by mail to any part ofthe Union, carefully packed. Terms .2 for the complete work, or three copies for five dollars. It is worthy of remark, that a similar work

is published in London at about 75 rents a number, and contains only 78 small duodecimo pages. This edition will cost 40 cents a
