STEAMBOAT EXPLOSION. The Mobile Journal of the 14th inst. contains the particulars of another steamboat explosion, and its attendant havoc upon human life. We learn from that paper, that the

s'.eamboat Benjamin Franklin, burst her boil

er, on the morning of the loth mst. as she was leaving tne wharf, for Montgomery, by which 4,the whole boiler deck, pilot house, en

gine and chimnevs, of the boat was blown

high ir.t-. the air, with many of the passengers,

some of whom tell to the water alive and not

materially injured.' Hut the explosion was

nevertheless attended with an unusual des

truction of life, as will be acn by the subjoin

ed list, which is supposed to be partial and incomplete. This fatal accident appears to have resulted from an undue detention of the

boat near the wharf, after having put off, to

accommodate a lagging passenger. The wa

ter in the boiler cot too low. The Mobile

paper says, ttis' supposed by those who witnessed the explosion, that from forty to fifty persons must have perisheJ. It is just, under the

circumstances mentioned, to call this waste of

human life the result of accident? Surely it is time to interpose the safeguard of legislative enactments in regard to steam navigation. From the Norfolk Boacon.

We have been politely favored with the fol

lowing extract of a letter, dated U. S. Ship Peacock, Bombay, Ovt. 24. V

On the morning of 20th Sept. at 2 o'clock

we were aroused by the ship s getting ashore

we immediately furled sails. She was going

71 miles per hour when she struck. The

soats were gotten out and sounded round the

ship, after which the stream anchor was car

ried out in the direction of deep water at

viavhghtsaw a low sandy island to the north

ward bearing from E. to W. with shoal water all round us. We made every exertion to

heave the ship olF, but could not move her

we then started water, threw overboard spare

spars, guns, shot, provisions, kc. and afte

many reverses on Tuesday, we had the pleas-

ure of seeing the ship in water deep enough

toiloat her. IJunng this time many smal

vessels called Dorcs were near us, and likevu

tures watching the their prey, and while we were busy in getting into deep water, they

commenced robbing a rait we made of ou

spars to ho-d provisions &c. and to land u no

if we had lost the ship. At another time they attempted to cut off one of our boats, that

was carrying out a kedge, but a few shots from

our guns (for we did not throw all overboard

made them relinquish their attempt. These

iwless people are Bodouin Arabs who hv

by plunder, and if it had been our misfortune to have lost the ship, (he least of our suffer-

ngs would have been to have been made laves of. At sunrise on Tuesday morning,

while there was but little hope of getting the

ship afloat, Mr. Roberts left the ship in one of

our boats for Muscat, to carry the treaty and

to have relief sent us from that place. On the same morning we hove offand anchored

in 31 fathoms water, as we could do no better, where she struck v ery heavily part of the

lime. 1 he tide rises here six feet at 4 o -

clock, the tide began to rise. We got under-

weigh on Wednesday night ar.d anchored in

6 fathoms water next day we got out to sea and found that we had been on shore in the

Gulph of Mayziers, on a small sand key. We

arrived saiely at Muscat, and found that the Sultan had done every thing in his power to

atioid us relief. He htted out a slop of war in 21 hours, and despatched her to us with all kirds of refreshments, and ordered the Governor Zoar to sail for Mazia with all the Dows and 300 men to render us every assitance (hat we might require. We met the sloop

the day before we arrived; and after our ar

rival at Muscat, he evinced in every way,

0!i Court and .Vrrc Court. Every body recollect the feuds in Kct.tucky growing out of the quarrels between the Old Court nnd

New Court parties. The white rose and the

red were scarcely more prolific of difficulties

mid strife They have bten happily settled in that State, but one of her daughters to the

West, the State honored as the residence of the renowned Col. Benton, seems to be emulous

renewing similar scenes. The second Judi

tial District of Missouri rejoices in twojudges, the one named Hot and the other McBride,

each of whome holds the other as an usurper,

nmt bis appointment as illecal and void.

Politic?, as usual, is at the bottom of the busi

ness. At the session of the Court on the fourth of Februarv, as we learn from the iSt.

Louis papers,'both Judges made their appearance. Judge Hunt notified the proper offi

cers of his intention to hold Court; and so did

the old Judge, McBride. The clerk and

eheritl took lime until the next day to consider

th matter. On Thursday both Judges took

their scats in Ihe court room, and garc orders

for the Court to be opened. The clerk ex

pressed an unw illingness to act, because his I. nod was informal. Judire Hunt stated to

him that so soon as the court was regularly

opened he would attend lo the bond, bu

there v:is some other business which must

attended to first. Judgci McBride directed

the clerk to nad the record of the last day o

the last term; but this was countermanded

by Judgellnnt. The Sheriff was directed by Judge McBride toarijnnrn the court tothenext term, but Judge Hunt demurred and neither order was obeyed. At this time, a few toch.ng' remarks passed between the rival Judges;
