Orisrin cf the term Yankee. Yankr was a
fiivoritc byword of father Jonathan Hastings of Cambridge, about 1713. Two aged ministers, who wc.ro at the colk ja in that town, have told me they remembered it to have been in use among the studnl, but had no recollection of it before that period. The inventor used it to express excellency. Yankee good horse, or yankee cider, and the like, were an excellent good korse, and excellent cider. The students used t borro horses of him, and his use of
the term upon all occasions, led them to adopt
it, and they gave him the name of yankee John. Yankee, probably became a hy-word
amog them, and was carried from the college
with them when they left it, and it was in that tvay, circulated and established through-.
out the country.
