A curiosity. A few davs since, as the ln-
horers were excavating the earth to lav the foundation of one of IJoott Cotton MilU. near
Central Uridge in this town, they found log-, nearly a foot in diameter, and several feet
long, at Iwcniy-threc feet below the surface of the ground. The spot was about a hun
dred feet Irom the precent margin ef Mcrtimack river. The wood was sound and perfect, aid could'be easily recognized as n' . Near the same spot were found also leaves in
a perfect state cf preservation ; the scalloped 1
edgings d stinct and entire; they were plain
ly oak: leaves. The bed on which the wood and the leaverested was hard gravel, and doubtless an original formation, m iking the hed of the river.
the earth above them, was llluvial. Thou-
ands of years must have been requi-itc for the
formation of the earth about this materials: and yet decay had not reached the wood, noi even the oak leaves, which seem much more deslructicablc. Lvxell Courier,
