From the Indiana Democrat. Gentlemen Some few days since I hnd two men employed lo dig me a well on my larm adjoining Indianapolis. Aftc? they had descended G or 8 feet through the ordinary soil, or rich earth, they came to a species of blue cl i, quite tenacious and hard, which continued until they had gone about ti7 feet

furthe r, in all, 37 feet from the surface or top

of the ground. They then came to some litter, consisting of leaves, small brush, bark. 5rc. and finally to a black walnut log about two feet in diameter, perfectly sound w ith the

bark on it. In rutting the side ol the log to make room for the curhing, n it did not layin the centre of the well, they could distinctly

hear something tall on the opposite ide ol the log, implying that it lay on the side or edge ol seme deep ravine; they proceeded three feet

further making forty leet, and quit for the

night, intending to prosecute their labors the

next morning, but to their perlect supnse and astonishment the water had flown into the

well, carrying a great deal of mud and dirt along and filling the well within C or 8 feet ol the top with water. Our supposilion is that the w ater found its way into the well by the side of the log, and in all probability communicated with some large stream of water running under the ground.

1 will remark for the henent of those who

are not familiar with the situ ilion of my fai m, that where the well is dug, the. land is elevated about CO or 70 feet above the. bed ol White river. Specimens of the bark and

chips may be seen by going to the well. Respectfully yours, John II. Sandehi. "Wood Lawn, Jan. 8, 18o5.

"Why, I understand, between you and me, he don't make any thing of going into a tavern; right into the very bar room; and taking a glass of todd y or a button of flip, and talking and cracking a joke just like any common man."' "Oh! shocking !"' groaned Johnson. Mlt is shocking, indeed, if it be true,"' said the other '"and more than all that, I'm informed, that when he was at New York, a few w eeks ago, autually went to the play house." " Oh ! monstrous !'' groaned Johnson. "And besides. I'm told, that after church of a Sunday, he goes out a riding with his wife, the same as though 'twas a week day.'" "Oh! unaccountable!"' groaned Johnson." "And furthermore, I'm informed, that he never marries a couple, without taking the unholy liberty of kissing the bride, the same as all the rest of the company.'1 "Oh! what a wretch-" groaned Johnson. ' But between you and me, he' taken greater

The stranger clergyman was so shocked at this, that he scare ly opened his mouth again,

till they reac hed llartlord. Kntering the convocation with Johnson, he immediately broach, ed this new charge against that unlortunale gentleman, and very honestly appealed to himself for its confirmation. "This gentleman," a lid he pointing to Johnson, "ii my authority." " But that gentleman,'' said one of the assembly who knew him, "is Mr. Johnson himself. "Is that Mr. Johnson?" exclaimed the strange clergyman, starting and stating as if he had seen a ghost. But the joke was too

good a one lo clrtip there; and the clerical geolemei. who, among themselves, are generally

loud ot sport; bandied it so lietly, and so muc h at ihe honest clergy man's expense, that he pretty soon slunk away, and, mounting his

hoise, rode, out ol llartlord as soon as possible.
