The New York Time has the following

paragraph in reference to our claims on

FianteT1IE FRKNCII CLAIMS.

In confirmation of the rumor which we

mentioned on Tuesday of our Minister at

Paris desiring to be recalled, we aie now en

abled to state that a Setter ha been received

from one who is ini intimate relations with

.Mr. Livingston's family, afliriniug that lie is

II at ease both in body and mind, annexed

by the procrastination and evasive policy pur

sued by the trench government in relation

to our claims. It states that the minister:

declined bringing the subject before the

Chamber of Deputies at their late session un der the pretext of the shortness cf its dura

lion, and the consequent hazard of defeat. That neither Mr. Livingston nor any of the

Americans there have the slighleit confidence

in the sincerity of the professions of the

Frenchmen, but believe their design to be to gain time by the invention of these and other

frivolous excuses of delay. I he fallacy of the pretence that there would have been danger of the bill being lost is apparent to all who are aware of the very great ministerial Ma

jority in the Chambers; the cabinet can car

ry any measure which they choose to bring forward and their shuttling in regard to out claims, eonceeded and guaranteed by their own ratified treaty, affords clear enough evidence that they purpose to evade payment altogether if they can.

Curious. We learn from the Boston Mercantile Advertiser, that a successful attempt has lately been made by the Abbe Jamcnt,

Director of the Hospital of lion Saureur, in Normandy, to teach a person who has been deaf from his birth, to speak! He lately exhibited his pupil at the Academy of Caen, and fnanv questions were addressed to him by

signs and in writing, all of which he answered verbally without hesitation. The tone of his voice is represented as being very singular,

and produces an unnatural effect. He is a

nephew of Cardinal Caiare, and u eighteea years of ae.

FOR THE MF.SSKNCF.R. Gn. Keen. The statement published in your Ujt paper, under the head of '-incendiary," in which one of our citizens is accused of settieg tire to the house of James Moicei . is without the least foundation in truth and ha? iusllv excited the almost universal indig

nation of the citizens of this neighborhood.

The dwelling in question is an old decayed

log cabin, the chimney of which is nearly two feet below the roof; the night on which the tire accurred w as quite windy, and the spark from the chimney caught in one of the w eight

poles, which was rotlon ard dryc, and dire illy over the chimney instead ol being on the

opposile end of the house as the article alluded to states. A voung man who had heon

Rumors. The Mil'edgeville Journal men-

We understand a passenger from Washing ton, In yestesdaj morning's stage, brings another rumor, viz: that Mr. Forsyth, the Secretary of State, is to be appointed Judge and that Mr. Rives is talked of as Secretary

of State. Rut these r mere rumors; and as newspaper editors are wont to say, 'require confirmation.' The same passenger brings a report, that several frauds have been practiced on the

guilt.

The Agent withstood hii importunities

and his bribe's, and has been sent on to Ver

among them, against Rennet, the Delegate

elect, and ngain t a magistrate of the county who have decamped from the premises.

ValucMe Properly. A farm on Long Island,

on the .rrorts nine miles Irotn the City of

New York, belonging to the Messrs. Stewarts,

was sold at auction for 49,000 dollars. There

wcie only one hundred acres in the tract. It

was purchased with a view to the budding ci a

new city at that point. The day is not far dis tant, when New York and its environs will rank with London and Paris, in point of population. The City of New York lone contains near 300,000. Tha Circuit court has been in session in this

place since Monday last, and very little business of interest has been brought before it. The court

will very probably adjourn to morrow evening.

Tha only cases which have excited much inter-

t are the casee of Andrew Lyons on an indict

ment for an assault and battery, and Casander

larrel against Hiram Allen, for a breach of

Mariiage contract. In the former case Lyons

was foon.l guilty and fined 5 dollars, and 15 days imprisonment in the county jail. The latter case

was tried by jury on yesterday evening. 1 he

fatt plaintiff, as a balm for her broken heart,

obtained a verdict niratnt Mr. Allen for OINL

l UOUSANI) DOLLARS. This we are inform

ed , is the first case of the kind which was ever

instituted in the Franklin Circuit Court, and the stamp of discountenance which a jury of the county have put upon this "breach of contract"

will be apt to make "beaux beware how they tamper with the feelings of the heart. ImiIs beware'.!
